How can I hide the backlinks tab in the content display for certain content types? For example, I don't wish for the links to show up for page content type.

Yes. Edit the view. Under arguments, click on the "Search: Links to" argument; You should see a Validator section and a list of node types. By default, none of them are checked. Check only the node types you want this to appear for. Click Update and then Save.
