The http://drupal.org/project/roleassign module provides check-boxes on user edit and create pages. their look and behavior are same as default role check-boxes, but their IDs are bit different.
It would be nice to add conditional integration between both this useful modules.

Since this issue has gone quiet, am assuming it is no longer interesting. If someone is interested in some form of integration, then please create a new issue and spell out some details about desired functionality.
