Dear drupal users.
I need to have some idea whether or not it is a pipedream for me to hope to be able to run a useful drupal 4.7 installation on a Debian Linux vserver with 256MB RAM?
I cannot easily afford to use a dedicated Linux host with more memory, although I have been offered access to a standalone debian linux host, but with only 128MB of RAM.
I am having unexpected problems with a drupal site which someone else has built for me. It worked apparently properly on the host on whihc it was developed, but not on my vserver. The site just stalls when the home page is requested.
I intend to attempt to debug the problem, but if people tell me that I have no hope of being able to running a reasonably useful drupal installation capable of coping with, perhaps, around 5,000 hits/day, in the early stages, then it could save me some trouble.
Here's some stas which might be of use. (I wasn't able to post it to http://pastebin.com, sorry.)

I should think so...
My own site is on a Xen VPS running Debian-Sarge, Apache2, & PHP via fastcgi. I've got only 128MB of ram and have been serving up 4000-5000 page per day without any troubles (well, for about a month now!). Typically about 60MB are in swap, so I've been thinking of upping the ram, but frankly response times seem quite good so I'm no worrying about that just yet.
I'm not expert at optimizing my server so I don't think it is anywhere near capacity. I've also run some stress tests.
I'd be interested to hear other folks experience, but I should think a 256MB would be ample for your needs. Also, one nice thing about going VPS, you can just request more ram if you need it.

Definately
Definately, Don't see why not, I'm running smoothly on 128 Megs of ram!

Should work fine, I used to
Should work fine, I used to run Drupal on a VPS with 128MB of RAM. If this is your own box, you might consider trying Lighttpd+FastCGI instead of Apache, and using MySQL's low memory config. (MySQL provides like 4 sample configuration files, basicly you take the one with -lowmem in the filename, copy it to /etc, and rename it to my.conf, though I'm not certain on the exact filename.)
Thanks
Benofsky, ztnews, and toe,
This is great news!
Thanks immensely.
