Not sure this is by design or a bug, the "Contains input" has not remove whitespace (beginning and end) before search.

So far this is the only way to actually search for standalone words (its a hack yeah), so it might not be a good idea to remove this possibility before adding any new options to direct the text search (that however would be best done with core search.module integration or Apache Solr integration even, so its a bit of a stretch to go to ATM).
