Steps to reproduce:
* go to content structure edit panel (structure->content types->manage field)
* add a multimedia asset field using default settings
* create new node, don't forget to select some media, eg. upload an image
* edit same node, try to unassign previously selected media, you can set some other one, but not unassign

Although it might look not important for developers, it's very serious issue for publishers and editors.

I noticed this too... I agree this would quite flummox most editors :)

Not sure what the user interface should look like - I guess a "Remove media" button just to the right of the "Select media" button would be where most people would first look.

It could look and work same as File input, that is exactly as you've described. 'Remove media' buttom/link next to 'Select media'.

fixed patch in #7 to pass testing

Only changed the patch directory to be the the module not the whole drupal install. No other changes were made.
