Hallo there.
Ive got this assignment to build a dating site for the swinger community. My job had been on the project before but got shotten down, but now they want it up and running agian.
So there are some code already build. The site is atm build in html (tables and some divs) with php and smarty as the template system.

But i keep thinking, this would be easiere to build in drupal. So i would like you guys to tell me what you think about it ..

the site should contain :
being able to have different info about the user, gender, age, smoker(none smoker, sometimes, addicted)
messages between users
create folders for messages to keep
users relationship
users being able to be friends with eachother.
posting news in the swingercommunity
photogalleri for each user
able to upload videos for each user
having a club, and users can be attending that club. just like the fanpage thing on facebook i assume.
visitornumbers, and show which users has visited your site
able too block other users, and get number over how many blocks the user has.
a calender for each user, and being able to manage who can view it, friends or all.
a guestbook to write messages in, shown to public.
make difference between paid user and none paid user.

And last a chat module of somekind with webcam integration. So they can view eachother.

Hopefully this is enough to get a view of the situation, and guide me if i should go for a drupal, or make it all in rawr coding.

thx for the help :)!

yes you can create dating site using drupal. you have install Private Message Module. For personal information use check box or drop down list. also install any photo module. for calender you need to install two modules one is Event module and Second is Calender Module

yeah, that all looks like stuff that I've had experience doing myself in Drupal, or can see how it could be done. Either way, you are way better off using Drupal as a base, and then making your own module for anything that you're unsure of than starting from scratch.

it is going to be a lot better than Joomla or Wordpress for what you're after, as you need some decent tools for user management.

i've had the most experience with Drupal 6, as D7 is pretty new still.

The basics:
- Check out CCK http://drupal.org/project/cck and Views http://drupal.org/project/views first, which essentially gives you a UI for performing SQL queries in various places around the site
- Posting news is just a content type, super easy
- Stats are easy, and come with Drupal core, there are also contrib modules to expand that functionality

User stuff:
- Content Profile http://drupal.org/project/content_profile lets you build user profiles in the same was as other content on your site
- Views can accept user ID as an argument for doing database queries, so you can use calendar http://drupal.org/project/calendar and date http://drupal.org/project/date to build those user calendars
- Organic Groups for your "club" feature http://drupal.org/project/og
- Ubercart http://www.ubercart.org/ has functionality where users can buy roles, so you can have premium accounts
- Here's a review on "friend" functionality modules http://www.mediacurrent.com/blog/comparison-friend-modules-drupal-6
- Node Gallery http://drupal.org/project/node_gallery works for me as a way to have per-user galleries, and integrates with other modules. Beware, there's no upgrade path from 2.x to 3.x so go straight for 3
- I'm sure you could do something with the flag module to block users http://drupal.org/project/flag

Messaging, Notifications and Triggered Conditional Actions

Other Notes
- I haven't used any chat modules, but a quick search revealed that there were a few, with varied approaches to the task
- Instant Messaging between users is definitely possible, again there are a few different ways to do this, depending on whether you want to do it via email/inline with Drupal/both/status updates, etc...
- Have a look at Heartbeat as well http://drupal.org/project/heartbeat
