Motivation

The just released Rooms module gets lots of questions about if it is possible and how to use it in other use cases than (hotel) room bookings. We want to prevent everybody registering its own use case as a separate issue, as this would spread ideas, suggestions, requirements, etc.

Instead this issue is used as collector of questions, answers, requirements and features that would be needed to get other use cases handled as well. If and when features will be added, separate issues will be created for these specific features.

Note that this issue is a task and will not be used to solve/implement specific features, nor is it a commitment from the maintainers to actually implement any feature that is listed here. The first priority of the maintainers is to release a stable version aimed at the tourism branch, more specifically at those who rent out multiple similar rooms.

What use case should be considered?

  1. Holiday rental.
  2. Sub-day or hourly booking.
  3. General resource allocation.
  4. ...

Please feel free to add your own use case.

Remaining tasks

Per suggested use case we want answers to the following questions:

  • Why is Rooms currently unable to handle the use case? In other words: what features are lacking.
  • Are there alternative modules and why are they not used to solve the problem?
  • ...

Holiday Rental

Alternatives:

  • Availability Calendars: this module is lacking booking integration, though it supports reservation request forms.

Lacking features in Rooms:

  • Availability is stored at day level slots, not smaller time slots.
  • Assignable permissions for editing availability to accommodation owners (eg, permission "edit own booking unit"), URL's should not start with admin/*.
  • ...

Hourly booking

Alternatives:

  • Event or Date, and Resource Conflict modules.
  • Booking Time Slots: No D7 version, minimally maintained (which in itself is not a reason to not use it if it is relatively feature complete, but I don't have experience with this module, so please elaborate if you do have experience with this module).
  • ...

Lacking features in Rooms:

  • Availability is stored per day, not at smaller, configurable, time slots.
  • ...

General resource allocation.

Alternatives:

Please do not hesitate to add unlisted alternative modules or provide answers to the questions.

Original report by [pjcdawkins]

My workplace is a large organization which (among other things) manages a lot of rooms and room-like facilities, e.g. meeting and conference rooms.

Will this be a useful module for me, or will it be too hotel (i.e. bedroom) specific?

Comments

Riversedge’s picture

It is non-specific enough to allow for many use cases.

as one would hope with any module of course.

Thanks!

So rehearsal rooms booked for an hour at a time would be possible using your module?

fietserwin’s picture

Version: » 7.x-1.x-dev

The problems (with among them many design issues) you face when allocating resources for small periods of time, be it fixed or variable time slots, are completely different than when focusing on per day rental. I always guessed that there would be other projects tackling this much better, but this request seems to keep coming back:

- #721762: Hourly booking, especially comment 13 #721762-13: Hourly booking

So apparently it does not yet exist. Idea for a new module?

As with the other module (availability_calendars) I'm inclined to tag this won't fix, but that's up to the module maintainer.

Another one just came in #1230262: Make other bookable entities.

I think there are two things that need to be done here to keep people from posting the same issue, and it getting marked as a duplicate of a closed ticket.

1) leave this issue open in the issue queue marked as postponed, and maybe updating the name of the ticket to be more general, and provide an issue summary that summarizes ideas proposed in other tickets that were marked as dupes. I've taken care of the ticket status here. (I think it was marked closed by accident anyway).

2) Add a section heading to the project page "Usecases other than hotel rooms" with a blurb about the current status, and a link to this issue.

Currently it is not possible to sell (seats) tour packages with fixed departures (e.g. Every Monday) with Drupal Rooms.

Lacking features in Rooms:
-> fixed departures (e.g. Every Monday). Example of an integration for both, using tour departures and tour freesale: http://www.tourcms.com/support/setup/tailor_made.php

ronald_istos’s picture

I gave this some thought. I think all the features discussed here are great but we need to be wary about pushing Rooms in lots of different directions.

Hotel, villa and b&bs already have all sorts of variations if we drop into the same module a number of different ideas (tours, books, projects, kittens) we will end up with an unwieldy tool.

Instead perhaps we can pull out of Rooms things that can be reused (e.g. bookable units or display and interaction with a calendar or interaction with commerce) and then build the correct domain-specific application around those components. These will create better tools for each use case rather than one, big confusing tool with a steep learning curve that handles all scenarios (... wasn't there a CMS that tries to do that ;-) ).

For me - Rooms as it is heading to the 1.0 mark - needs to solve the hotels, villas and b&bs problem. That process will teach us a lot and it will put us in a better position to solve other problems.

urlaub’s picture

Wise words ronald_istos, I prefer this clean and stable rooms version solving the hotels, villas and b&bs problem as well. We can build based on this other solutions.

Keep up this pace can't wait to check out Rooms 1.0 !

fietserwin’s picture

Correct, concentrate on releasing first, and postpone this issue until after you have a stable release. In a sense this is why we try to collect all these requests in this single issue. No need for you to reply to individual requests.

ñull’s picture

I think the best would be to develop other user cases in a different set of modules. It would be good though that these separate projects keep in close communication with each other. Is there a group where these collaborate and agree on common APIs? I think that would be very important.

toby53’s picture

thanks for all the great work on this project !

Is there any estimate when the "Limited time slot" project might start up ?
We are interested in this feature.

Marked #1229298: Rental feature as a duplicate. What is the status on this issue?

jwilson3’s picture

The status has not changed from postponed.

Feel free to elaborate the issue summary to include your use case and any potential other solutions you may have found, to be helpful for others.

For the foreseeable future, Rooms is targeting the hotel industry only. Ronald elaborated on the dilemma in a great blog post earlier this year.

Nehbur’s picture

I would love the feature of being able to set time blocks as an administrator where visitors can reserve a time block within a day. +1 on that.

TauTau’s picture

For the hourly reservations: that sounds exactly what I'm looking for, an appointment scheduler. Resources (people, things etc) that can be booked within fixed time frames. In my case, variable length would be needed. But I think that woud be better suited in a separate module, since the handling of hours within a day is quite different from whole days.

artatac’s picture

Camping and caravan sites - pitches
Rooms current limitations
* inability to specify a minimum stay period at busy times
* updating status and pricing on 200 pitches has to be done 200 times never ideal
* different pricing weekends and weekdays
* extras such as extra people and cars, current unit price is based on 2 people and 1 car

Hope this feedback is useful

jlhs’s picture

How about booking tables at restaurants?

artatac’s picture

My understanding is that it works best with days rather than times but if you created content types based on the sitting times eg
7pm table x 10units
8pm table x 10 units etc

That should work..

jlhs’s picture

artatac,

Thankyou very much, for the tip about the content types, makes sense.

Much appreciated!

I have just posted this issue before finding this post:

I'm looking for the best solution in Drupal to make Short term apartment rentals website.
Any visitor would have the possibility to add his own apartment on the website, and will be in charge to add the availability and prices according to date.

I have the feeling that Rooms module has been more designed for hotel only ?

Each apartment needs a lot of information: photos, size, number of bedrooms, capacity, bathrooms, location, facilities...

The website would certainly charge only a percentage of the rent amount. (The commission for the website.) The difference will be charged outside of the website.

If Rooms is adapted to these kind of website, I would be really glad to have more information on how to use Rooms for my specific use case.

Regards

fietserwin’s picture

If the payments are not done via the website, Availabiity Calendar might be what you are looking for. See e.g. the demo site on the project page.

heyyo’s picture

Thanks for your answer fietserwin, i would prefer to make part of the payment on the website too, and it seems to be possible with rooms.
I have seen before this module Availability Calendar, but I didn't know it was possible to display different prices on the calendar, I thought it was only for availability. I will give it a try.

fietserwin’s picture

Availability calendar is indeed only for availability. The prices are a different field within the same entity. A.C. gives you a field that you combine with other fields to create your entity type, Rooms give you a predefined entity type (that you still can extend though).

camdarley’s picture

For a rental site I'm making, I had to create a new module to allow people to rent stuff on chosen date, with an availability management.
I used features from both Commerce:stock and Rooms module.
Comme have a look here: http://drupal.org/sandbox/camdarley/1762222
I think this is more inspiration for the future of rooms module than a full module. I had to develop it quickly to meet my client needs.

elperuanito’s picture

Hey guys,

Would this module be suitable for booking a class (running on a single date only)? So instead of a Room Type you would create a class type (e.g. seminar on Drupal Modules) and this class would run on 3 separate days. Each user would only need to book 1 day (I guess more if they want to!), as the class is the same each time just running on a number of dates. When you go into the Drupal Modules product, you have a calendar that shows the available dates.

Would Rooms be suitable? If not, what would be?

pixelsweatshop’s picture

@elperuanito It sounds like http://drupal.org/project/registration would be more useful for your use case

elperuanito’s picture

Thanks for your response nicoz, will check it out. :-) Will report back in detail when I figure it out.

Hey guys.

Found this discussion after some time of browsing. I am starting a project, which will have book selling & renting services. At first I thought it can be done with Drupal Commerce directly. But as I discussed & browsed in their forum, I came to know this is not possible.

So the thing is --

I will have a BOOK with different details about it & attributes, how many copy I have & the serial number of per copy. All the titles will be listed at the portal. A customer can ADD TO CART & buy or ADD TO PROFILE/WISHLIST/BOOKRACK to rent it. At his BOOKRACK he can request the package to be delivered. The first two items(based on availability, handled by number of items & serial number of it) will be shown to him against his request & he will submit the request.

At admin side, all the request will be listed. Admin will select a serial number of BOOK and close the request. Now number of item will be decreased for being available for the request next time.

Once BOOK get returned back, Admin can update that serial number to be available for renting again.

Yeah, in ADD TO CART option, user will simply buy the item.

So how this module will help me in achieving this & if not then what approach do you suggest me to follow to set up this kind of system?

Many Thanks :)

re-setting issue status.

@Rajeevkr: your request is a fair bit different than the current rooms use case - I did find a sandbox for commerce rentals that might be worth investigating: http://drupal.org/sandbox/skottler/1312552

rajeevk’s picture

@acrollet: Thanks for the response. I also came acroos the sandbox when I was browing & left a message to the maintainer but till now he has not responded.
As per my research, If I look into the drupal commerce for renting solution then there would be much problem, so I have though to handle this by my own code to make appear a block on some condition & handle the request from my own table...

Though I am going to face many problem due to compatibility of my module with views & some other module..but I hope it will work out in long run & may be I would help community too in some use cases...

Hello ladies and gentlemen!

I would like add a new characteristic for rooms module. I believe that is very interesting that we can add a fields in the search box of the bookings; for example: Locations, or another parameters as babies, dogs (yes - no) etc.

I still have not started reading the module code, but I am willing to work together to implement this functionality if possible.

Regards!

pq’s picture

Hi,

Just wondering if now that a stable release of the module has been out for quite a while (since you mention in the summary that that was the first priority) if these tasks functionalities are likely to be developed going forward.

I'm particularly interested in the hourly bookings and would be more than happy to support via testing and feedback if this were to move forward.

Thanks,

crustovich’s picture

+1 for Locations option in bookings availability search block.

fietserwin’s picture

#38 and #40: You would be better off with #2265737: Can I create a view that filters (a.o.) on availability as that provides more flexibility. Adding fields to a "private" form is possible with a hook_form_alter, so that is easy, however influencing the search on submit would be the tricky part, but easy with Views.

Manuel P.V.’s picture

#41 Hello fietserwin, Thank you very much for your support :) I read your issue but when I read there, I've a sensation that the solution hasn't been found... Can you explain which route you took, please?

#39 PQ & #40 crustovich, all right! if the solution with views is running, this aspect will be solved, and I propose that we make a videotutorial with this implementations / integrations.

fietserwin’s picture

re #42: I meant that the mentioned issue is what they re looking for, not that it is already solved over there. AFAIK, there is currently no solution. The route I took is ignore Rooms (for a 2nd time) :(

Manuel P.V.’s picture

#43 and What other solution did you take? Another module?

I start a thread in the forum: https://www.drupal.org/node/2394147

ronald_istos’s picture

We are currently working on Rooms 2.0 which will be using a generic booking API - drupal.org/project/rsrv - that will allow booking and reservation solutions to be built for a number of different situations. I think that will answer several of the needs people have.

In the meantime for some solution with Rooms 1.3 (and the forthcoming Rooms 1.4) you can have a go at https://www.drupal.org/sandbox/istos/2362137

ronald_istos "In the meantime for some solution with Rooms 1.3 (and the forthcoming Rooms 1.4) you can have a go at https://www.drupal.org/sandbox/istos/2362137"

And How can I implement this? Sorry xD I am a little lost now with the drupal.org interface, and I do not found the source code...

Thank you very much again.
