As reported at: http://drupal.org/node/1593980#comment-6874006

We have tested local installs with 127.0.1.1 aegir.local line present in /etc/hosts, because we have tested workarounds for DNS issues discussed in #1593980: Localhost install works as expected on Ubuntu Precise and Debian Squeeze. Unfortunately, we have managed to break it completely now, because getent test doesn't work without either proper entry in the /etc/hosts file or real DNS (not just fake local DNS in the pdnsd config), which is default.

Great!
I was opening a issue for this but you're quicker than your own shadow :)

The best aproach it to do a fresh install on a new VM, using boa in-head ...?
I've already started the script on the same VM I had had the error and it is blocked for the last 40 minutes on this point:
Barracuda [Mon Dec 24 15:12:06 WET 2012] ==> INFO: Installing MariaDB, please wait...
I've used the following command:
aegir:~# boa in-head local myuser@mydomain.com max

Yes, it should be tested with boa in-head. We are currently too busy with upgrades to test it further, so any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Note that if it hangs on MariaDB install for you, you may want to check the full install backend log in /var/backups for more details, but it will be yet another issue, unrelated to this one here.

Also, try a clean install for consistent and reliable results. BOA is designed to force install on every attempt if something fails, but depending on where it failed, subsequent re-installs may not be able to complete without manual intervention.

I've just tried with Ubuntu Precise using the following commands:
~sudo -i
#wget -q -U iCab http://files.aegir.cc/BOA.sh.txt
#bash BOA.sh.txt
#boa in-head local my@email max

And it exited with an "broken drush" error (sorry but the console scroll was blocked so I'm unable to provide the complete output). Also it gave some errors due to problems in reaching archive.ubuntu.com at a particular stage.
Attached the installation log.
Tomorrow I'll give it a go again and with Debian also.

PS: Merry Christmas!

Tested on Debian 6.0.6 64bit Virtual box VM, pure vanilla without any modifications.
Apparently the Barracuda stage went OK, but it never ended the Octopus.
Attached are the install output and install log. I was surprised with the "verbosity" of the install output. Is it because I was installing a HEAD version, so more informative?
I'm not sure if we're still talking about the same bug though. I'll try to dwell into all these informations tomorrow.

Just one, maybe dumb, question: is it possible for me to install a "working" 2.0.4 version so that I may test some platform migration? What is the procedure for that?
In parallel I'll continue to test 2.0.6.

This should work better: http://drupalcode.org/project/barracuda.git/commit/20589ec

Thanks for the feedback!

Just tested #7 on a fresh Debian 6.0.6 64bit Virtualbox VM.
Install went right to the end without and errors. Still some warnings came out during Barracuda install. Attached are the install output and install logs.
Thanks for the great work!
Installing now on a Ubuntu VM just to check.

This workaround is much better, IMO:

http://drupalcode.org/project/barracuda.git/commit/895d2c6
http://drupalcode.org/project/barracuda.git/commit/de0c3b3

But I need to test this on a clean install, just to make sure it really works, because if it works, it also fixes stable release install.

Also, I have disabled the forced debug mode and silenced some errors (in HEAD). Some other errors seems to be related to your connection issues during install, I think.

There was yet another fix required, committed both to HEAD and stable (as a hot-fix for critical issue): http://drupalcode.org/project/barracuda.git/commit/bbfbaec

Yet another hot-fix was required, at least for Debian Squeeze on localhost: http://drupalcode.org/project/barracuda.git/commit/87e3035

Now it works correctly for BOA-2.0.5 local install both on Ubuntu Precise and Debian Squeeze (see below).

Just ended the installation of HEAD on a fresh Debian squeeze Virtualbox VM (minimal server with no GUI and just SSH). It went smoothly up to the end :) - Thanks!
Logs as attachment.

Thanks for the detailed report!

Note that now it is fixed also for stable BOA-2.0.5 and is compatible with desktop-type VM, like http://bit.ly/boa-squeeze and http://bit.ly/boa-precise
