There have been more and more modules submitted that focus on the lighter side of life, however, there isn't a true category for them. We need a new category for these modules to be grouped together in. I think "Games" is too limiting and "Fun" doesn't really "feel right". I'm thinking something more like "Lighter side" or "Leisure" or something like that.

Recreation?

Entertainment?
Amusement?

Thanks for the links... These could be useful on community sites.

Amusement or Recreation seem better.

Entertainment may imply "targeted for the entertainment business sector", and hence can be misleading.

oadaeh’s picture

Yes? No? I don't know? Get lost? Just curious.

greggles’s picture

Maybe we should have a poll on this on g.d.o ?

I like all the proposals pretty well, though each one is "overloaded" in some way. Entertainment has a hollywood connotation. Recreation is tied to "Recreational Vehicles" and outdoor activities. Amusement to amusement parks. Those are just the connotations a typical person from the USA would get, though, and not necessarily true world wide.

Also, do we really need this? How many modules would fit in this category? 10? 20? A full list would help both make the case for this term and make it easy to add them once the term is installed on d.o.

Adding some obvious ones to the list you had shows:
http://drupal.org/project/game
http://drupal.org/project/rpg
http://drupal.org/project/concentration
http://drupal.org/project/magicsquares

4 seems like a somewhat small group - hopefully there are some others I'm not aware of. "Chat" modules might also fit in this group.

oadaeh’s picture

Ah. Yes. Well, okay. I do also believe it would be a rather small list, but I also think the list is growing. Here's some of the modules I think would fit in this category. Mind you, I'm not thinking only of games.

In addition to the four you mentioned, there is also:
http://drupal.org/project/chessboard
http://drupal.org/project/christmas_snow
http://drupal.org/project/ff1
http://drupal.org/node/31166
http://drupal.org/project/jeopardy
http://drupal.org/project/pirate
http://drupal.org/project/wowroster

Here are a few others that might be considered edge cases:
http://drupal.org/project/family
http://drupal.org/project/fetchgals
http://drupal.org/project/guitar
http://drupal.org/project/moviedb
http://drupal.org/project/moviereview
http://drupal.org/project/movies
http://drupal.org/project/onthisday
http://drupal.org/project/quotes
http://drupal.org/project/recipe
http://drupal.org/project/thisdayinhistory
http://drupal.org/project/webcomic

There might be others that could be considered (Google Earth, Picasa, Weather, etc.), but in general, if it didn't jump at me as belonging to this group, I didn't include it in either of the lists.

(Also, Concentration is currently "Access denied" due to various things. I hope to correct that before too long, but I do have other priorities.)

I actually thought there were more already in contrib, but I guess not.

dman’s picture

When I'm bookmarking sites like that, yeah I'd call them 'amusements'

Dunno if family.module and recipe.module belong there, but it certainly looks like there's enough to make it worthwhile.
And doing this category will be good to tidy up the other lists by moving them out also.

Title: New module category needed . . . » Module category amusements/gimmicks

+1 ...not to mention obvious candidates like http://drupal.org/project/quiz

Also +1 for "amusements". Another option might be "gimmicks".

oadaeh’s picture

Another one to add to the list: http://drupal.org/project/golfpal

aaron’s picture

As a co-maintainer of 3 "game engine" modules in that list, I'd prefer "Games" as the category name (and 5 Second Game is another for the list). People know what that is automatically, whereas they might have to think about "amusements" or "gimmicks". If I'm looking for a "Real Time Strategy Game engine" for Drupal, I'd automatically look under games, were it present, whereas I might never think of looking in the others.

aaron’s picture

The list will certainly grow over time as well, especially as people begin to realize that yes, Drupal can be used to create games too. There are at least two other Drupal game engines that I'm aware of that the developers have chosen to not yet share them (but I hope they will eventually).

I would support a multi-keyword category (Games & Amusements) or something like Leisure. You have to choose the title which is the /least/ offensive or /least/ incorrect. A Game is an amusement, yes. But not all games are gimmicks, for instance and, in fact, a "gimmick game" is quite a negative connotation - one could imagine shady poker dealers or a nefarious shell game. All games, amusements, and gimmicks, however, tend to fall under the masterful "Leisure" (as an action, not a timeframe), but "Leisure" itself is too generic to be of much usage.

"Games & Amusements" for me. "Entertainment" is too generic - as someone already mentioned, movies could fall under "Entertainment", and I don't think that's really the goal of the category being proposed.

"Games & Amusements" sounds great.

Title: Module category games/amusements/gimmicks » Module category Games & Amusements

From what I understand from http://groups.drupal.org/games-and-game-apis, there are more Drupal games modules in the works, and there's even a proposed session at drupalcon http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/program/sessions/awesomeness-and-drupal that features several Drupal amusements (and there was a BOF on Drupal RPG at Boston earlier this year). It's time we make room for them.

The 2 first game projects mentioned are not accesable: http://drupal.org/project/concentration and http://drupal.org/project/magicsquares

oadaeh’s picture

Concentration was removed due to some questionable material in the game. I'm not sure what happened to Magic Squares. They can still be found on the author's personal site, along with two new games he now has available: Connect IV and Pong.

oadaeh’s picture

I realize that the majority of people responding to and following this issue are primarily interested only in the games aspect of the category, however, if this issue is to actually succeed, it's going to need a greater appeal. "Games & Amusements" is a fine option, but I think the module authors of modules like Family Tree, Guitar and Recipe are not going to think of their offerings as amusements, and might even be offended at being included (I could be wrong).

A variation on "Games & Amusements" I think will have greater appeal, and be more likely to be accepted, is "Games & Hobbies". I don't know how the world outside of the U.S.A. sees the word 'hobby', however, so I'm not sure what the reactions are likely to be. Also, I'm not sure how modules like Quotes, On This Day and This Day in History will fit into "Games & Hobbies". Maybe they don't fit at all.

morbus iff’s picture

Oadaeh: I wouldn't want them included. They're not at all, and you even remarked that they were edge cases.

I created the category - now it just needs folks to edit projects and move them into the category.

My advice is to move slowly or create an issue if you are somewhat unsure about a particular module.

oadaeh’s picture

Thanks, greggles.

I'll start going through the list, as I have time, and create task issues for each of the modules. I notice that there are already three there.

I've finally gone and notified all the existing module authors about this category (at least the ones that haven't already updated their modules). The only one I didn't notify was the imood module's author, as it's still at 4.7.x and there hasn't been a CVS commit in over three years.
