This is a portion of the ongoing reorganization of the Drupal.org handbook.

This section will be the first or second page in the new book. It should consist of approximately one page describing the advantages of having a drupal.org account and linking users to the place where such accounts are created.

Several folks at our recent sprint testified that they spent months lurking on d.o before they dared to actually register and start contributing forum posts, issues, docs, or code. So it's good to specifically welcome and invite new d.o registrations.

Title: Contrib Redesign: Get a drupal.org account » Contrib Redesign DROP task: Get a drupal.org account

AFAIK there is no existing documentation on this so this page needs to be written. We should have quick step-by-step instructions on how to sign up and things like turning on the contributor blocks (with key screenshots.) Then we can have a more detailed list of why someone would want to account.

For the time-being the page can be created as a child of the Welcome page (http://drupal.org/node/35172).

I'm making this a DROP task.

I've created a video on this topic (http://drupal.org/node/245850) so we can create a page that matches up with that and link to the video.

Just put together a short page on the account creation process. Images are included in the attachment but I can't insert them here, obviously.

Going through the process to get screenshots, I actually was struck by how many steps it takes to create an account on drupal.org. There's really no reason that it should take 10 steps to associate my online identity with a website. And there's no link for Open ID, Passport (or whatever Microsoft is calling that service now), or any other identity provider, which might allow some people to sign up in one or two clicks.

Also, there is an "error" in the process; there is no confirmation of the user's submission after entering their requested username, email, and country. The site jumps back to the homepage with no indication that the submission was successful or that the user needs to check their email for the password to logon.

  1. Visit http://drupal.org/ using your favorite web browser.
  2. Click the link to “Create new account” in the “User login” box.
  3. Enter a username of your choice.
  4. Enter your email address.
  5. Select your country.
  6. Click the “Create new account” button.
  7. Check your email account for a welcome email from info@drupal.org, which will contain your initial password.
  8. Go back to http://drupal.org/ and login using your username and password, exactly as specified in the email (your password is case sensitive).
  9. Click the “Log in” button.
  10. Change your password by entering a new password in the “Password” and “Confirm password” fields, and clicking “Submit” at the bottom of the page.
  11. Optionally, edit your profile information by clicking the “Edit” tab just below your username. This allows you to customize your http://drupal.org/ account including time zone, email account, full name, etc.

I found the page at http://drupal.org/node/272587 in the Getting Involved handbook, so I edited it to streamline it and merged in mtapman's work (except for the screenshots).

I think this could be published as is, assuming nobody sees any glaring mistakes. It might be improved with a screenshot, but I don't think that's a showstopper.

The page has been spiffed up by Crash Test with the screenshots and some intro text. This puppy is good. Thanks to all. I'm going to mark this fixed since it is already under the new book. wolfflow will be working on the user block table issue and make that a sub-page of this page.
