Hello,
This note is in reference to ask that Mediacurrent please be considered as a service provider in the Drupal services directory.
Include relevant details on your contributions to the Drupal project

Per your request, I'd like to highlight some of Mediacurrent’s recent involvement in the Drupal community. We have been intensively focused on Drupal projects of varying sizes for the last year. We have recently worked with such name recognizable clients as NASCAR.com , Emory University, and what we believe will be one of the larger user generated video, social networking sites called SheZoom. A complete cross-section of our Drupal portfolio can be found at www.mediacurrent.com./work.

We are paid and active members of the Drupal association, recently attended Drupalcon in Boston, and are active in our local, Atlanta Drupal community. We are currently redesigning and hosting the DrupalAtlanta.com website for free to try and help evangelize Drupal in what we feel is an untapped geography (the Southeast USA). At the Atlanta Drupal User Group we conduct monthly workshops and Q&A sessions for new users wanting to get oriented to Drupal. We’re working hard at outreach to other technical communities to promote Drupal. We are collaborating with Turner Sports New Media on a detailed case study that outlines their introduction to Drupal and our subsequent involvement with NASCAR.com. We have submitted national press releases about another recent project with the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University where we attempted to highlight how Drupal is being utilized in “real world” based scenarios. We have written several case studies, and try to provide some type of visibility to Drupal at every opportunity. Along those lines, when we redesigned our internal website (www.mediacurrent.com) we tried to highlight the benefits of Drupal and provided a link for site visitors to donate to the Drupal Association.

We have not been able to be as active with code contributions primarily because of clients who are worried about others cloning their idea or larger corporations that have bureaucratic procedures when it comes to partner marketing. When contractual restrictions did not allow us to contribute code back to Drupal.org on a recent project we donated $500 to sponsor a worthy member (aclight) to attend Drupalcon to help cover his travel expenses. However, we are encouraged that our current pipeline of projects will involve the opportunity to give back significant module contributions.

Finally, inclusion into the services directory would be an honor, and help serve as a springboard for continued growth. Our acceptance may inspire other new developers or firms as well who want to build a practice around Drupal.

If you have any questions or need any additional information (including Drual related references) please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you, Dave Terry (dave.terry@mediacurrent.com)

Can anybody weigh in if this meets the requirements? I'd say no, but I'd like to hear at least a second opinion.

mediacurrent’s picture

Hello,
I mainly wanted to bump this request, and see if feedback or action could be provided. In addition, we have been very active in the Drupal community since this original inquiry. To summarize, we have:

* Contributed a 30 page, Best Practices for Drupal guide that other developers and customers can utilize:
http://www.mediacurrent.com/blogs/mediacurrent-releases-free-best-practi...
* Organizing and sponsoring the first Drupalcamp Atlanta this Fall (200+- attendees expected) - we developed, designed and are hosting the website (www.drupalcampatlanta.com)
* Worked on a number of high profile Drupal sites including one (www.in-fisherman.com) that is currently featured on the front page of drupal.org
* Have led and organized the past 9 Atlanta Drupal User Group (ADUG) meetups (www.groups.drupal.org/atlanta)
* Organized a code sprint (14 attended) to redesign the Atlanta Drupal website
* Contributed 3 modules and are in the process of more. Those three modules can be found at:
http://drupal.org/project/css_rules
http://drupal.org/project/jquery_dropdown
http://drupal.org/project/role_subscription
* Actively started blogging about Drupal since the original post (feed is on Planet Drupal) - www.mediacurrent.com/blog
* Rather than sponsor Drupalcon DC, we provided a scholarship to a Drupalcon attendee (Alex Borque) who otherwise would not have been able to attend (and sent 4 employees).

Please let me know if any additional info is needed to help in the evaluation of our inclusion on the services directory.

Thank you,
Dave

killes@www.drop.org’s picture

Not sure, the three modules you mentioned are either already deprecated or don't have any releases...

greggles’s picture

Modules are just one measure, though, and Mediacurrent is leading the efforts on planning Drupalcamp Atlanta. Let's wait for that camp to happen (and maybe a positive endorsement from a webmaster who goes to the event...).

+1 from me to add them.

gdemet’s picture

I'm in agreement with greggles

drupalninja99’s picture

You're right in that role_subscription is being deprecated because ubercart came out with similar functionality. On css_rules and jquery_dropdown I was waiting until we launch the sites here in the next month or so to release official releases though I think they're both stable.

roshan_shah’s picture

+1 from me for their addition. They have been doing good work.

Just for record of site maintainers they have two drupal users 'mediacurrent' and 'mediacurrent-interactive'.

http://drupal.org/user/57223
http://drupal.org/user/171429

In my opinion, this should not deter from adding them to the list as I think they are two separate individuals 'Dave' and 'Paul'.

heine’s picture

I appreciate the contributions, but at the same time, I think this still lacks the WOW factor.

For starters, I would not classify your portfolio / press releases as contributions. The best practices guide is not on Drupal.org.

mediacurrent’s picture

@ Heine - Thanks for the feedback. If you could please elaborate on what you would consider more of a WOW factor.
I do think Drupal portfolio examples, and more importantly references, has direct relevance when someone is contemplating what service providers to choose. Also, the press releases we have sent out tried to incorporate the value of Drupal more than tout us. Thus, PR related activities like this do help from a marketing contribution standpoint. We certainly do not mind incorporating the best practices guide somewhere on drupal.org - the opportunity has never come up and not sure what the protocol would be. However, the guide is available for free on our website and was recently mentioned on an Acquia blog posting.

@ greggles - Thanks for the input. Yes, we are excited about the positive traction with DrupalcampAtlanta - it seems like your suggestion is that we revisit our submission until after the camp has been completed. In the meantime, we will also work on some of those other module contributions.

Status: Postponed (maintainer needs more info) » Closed (won't fix)

I guess the report can be marked as won't fix.

dman’s picture

I don't see that the services directory should be so exclusive as all that, it's a bit of a shame to see an otherwise valid application rejected due to lack of "wow" factor. It's not like anyone is asking for front page promotion of their corporate brochure, it's just a mention in a pretty dead area of d.o.

- has had a front-page case study promoted
- paid-up org member
- a fair track record. Maybe not huge, but entirely respectable
- good, no-fluff company bio

Even if the direct contributions are looked at as lightweight or outside of the requirements, I'd say that the outreach support in sponsoring a DrupalCamp is enough to deserve a spot in itself!

Why so tough? I'm one of the first to go up against spammers and self-promoters, but this request for listing is inoffensive and harmless.
I know we need gatekeepers on that page, but it looks like a bunch of reasonable requests have sadly died in the queue here. Can't we encourage firms to get involved more rather than shun them?

greggles’s picture

@dman - please see http://groups.drupal.org/node/24079 and http://groups.drupal.org/node/24082 if you want meta discussion.

dman’s picture

Thanks for the link. I see a lot more discussion has gone on there, I was referring only to the public published guidelines we see here, and knew that there were some in the current list that didn't appear to meet any of the suggested criteria. :-(
Ah well.

greggles’s picture

@dman, in those other threads that are about the meta issues... there is discussion of removing people who don't meet the current standards, who never did, or who are no longer active in the community. Let's discuss, there ;)

I'm reopening this issue, which should have been marked as postponed, not closed (won't fix). I'm +1 on adding mediacurrent (even if they do consider country music to be entertaining), they've been around the community for a while now and are definitely contributing quite a bit.

Component: Drupal services » Drupal service list

@Alex UA - thanks for re-opening this.

Let me know if any additional info is needed or what the next steps would be - its been over 2.5 years since the profile piece was written and I can update. If needed, I can also put together a recap of high-level contributions that have been made since the original request.

Thanks, Dave

alex ua’s picture

If you could update it, that would be great, and will (probably) help get you listed.

(On a side note, I really enjoyed Isaac's excellent post on the GSoC that was posted on the Mediacurrent blog.)

mediacurrent’s picture

Hi Alex,
Per your suggestion, here are some updated contributions and additional background:

• Drupal Association Organization Members since 2008
• Primary organizers for Drupalcamp Atlanta 2009 and 2010 (sold-out, 200+ attendee events). All sessions were recorded and videos contributed back to the community: http://www.vimeo.com/search/videos/search:drupalcamp%20atlanta/1dde9478
• Primary organizers for the last 3 years of the Atlanta Drupal User Group meetup – attendance has gone from 5+- people to 60+ (last month). In addition to helping with logistics, planning, finding speakers, etc. Mediacurrent has presented over 10 times – the slides can be found here: http://www.slideshare.net/mediacurrent/edit_my_uploads
• Subsidized and mentored 2010 Google Summer of Code participant, Issac Sukin. Isaac interned at Mediacurrent and continued work on many of the modules he maintains including his GSoC project (Facebook Style-statuses). A recap of his work/experience can be found here:
http://www.mediacurrent.com/blogs/my-drupal-google-summer-code-experience
• Additional Drupal marketing efforts included 36 blog posts about Drupal in 2010, writing 3 white papers on Drupal (third one to be released next month), and sponsoring numerous Drupalcamps (Florida, Texas, and San Diego in the past 5 months). We have been Drupalcon sponsors in D.C., San Francisco and Chicago – note: in Boston, we gave away a scholarship to an attendee (Alex Borque) v. sponsoring. We have written two case studies and submitted the lessons learned back to the community (one is on the front page of drupal.org now, the other can be found at http://drupal.org/node/497008).
• Recently started a Drupal Training division to help with education and expanding the Drupal talent pool. We just completed our first public workshop in Washington D.C. last month - http://www.mediacurrent.com/blogs/mediacurrent-drops-in-on-drupal-training
* In October, 2010 Mediacurrent team member Jeff Diecks started the Louisana Drupal User Group http://www.meetup.com/louisianadrupal/
• If more code contributions need to be highlighted I can post Mediacurrent employee drupal.org IDs; Mediacurrent’s Brent Ratliff was the main site builder for Drupalcamp Atlanta (www.drupalcampatlanta.com) and has been working with the Camp Organization Distribution (COD) team. The most active Mediacurrent code contributor is probably Jay Callicott (jaykali), who released his own Drupal distribution last week called OpenChurch http://drupal.org/project/openchurch

As I understand, the next step is approval from the webmasters? We could then update and edit our out-dated company profile within the Services section (note: have since updated company profile in comment #21). Again, if more information is needed please let me know.

Thanks,
Dave

+ 1 from me. Our company has also been waiting for a while (understandably) to be listed on the services page, however these guys have been waiting much longer and they're a far bigger operation than us and more active in Drupal events.

@mediacurrent - perhaps editing your profile page with the final format and content may help get a quicker approval

mediacurrent’s picture

@Mojah - Thanks for the positive feedback. I've taken you up on your suggestion to update the profile.

mediacurrent’s picture

Its been another few weeks and no movement...any feedback on next steps or approval? Thanks, Dave

greggles’s picture

Seems like time to revive this one.

Mediacurrent has done a lot to promote the project over the years. Jay Callicot is now http://drupal.org/user/42248

I'm still +1 on this even more strongly than I was back in 2009. Anyone else care to chime in?

roshan_shah’s picture

+1 again to get Mediacurrent listed. It is long overdue and they have everything and better than many others who have got listed with minimal reviews.

ron williams’s picture

While not absolutely necessary, adding formatting to the post above would be recommended for increased readability. See http://drupal.org/node/362868 as an example.

Otherwise, I support this company being added to the services section.
