I own and run a site name www.scratchbuildersguild.com
I hate how joomla breaks without warning and constantly needs to be repaired or fixed even if the site is idle for a month.
I would like some advice on a few things and hope this thread is both allowed and treated as a legitimate request. I bought and read a few chapters of the book and found I need that human guidance.
What version is the smartest to start with.
I am very open to 6 months of converting as a domain name change will happen too.
I want a rotating news banner on a front page.
Thank you for any and all help.

Welcome to Drupal :)
Yes I would start with 6... some of the more esoteric modules aren't out for 6, but the majority (and arguably all of the most important ones) are. I run several sites on 6 with no issues.
I wrote about a variety of learning resources yesterday in this post, which should be a good starting point: http://drupal.org/node/353116#comment-1178168
For you one additional thing you will need is the Views Slideshow module, for the rotating featured content on your home page (I don't believe it has the next/previous/pause options yet, but I believe I read that the feature for that is coming). You can see how I used it on just a rotating image here, though you can also include as much other data as you want, such as title, description, etc.
Since it's not necessarily clear at first how to do it, here's a short write-up I did on setting up a menu system like you have on your site: Creating hierarchical menus. This video may help too: Using Secondary Menus.
You may also want Printer, e-mail and PDF versions module, and possibly Forward module to replicate those features you have in Joomla. I haven't tried it myself yet, but Textsize module should be able to make the text resizing buttons you currently have. As it looks like you have some pages where you draw in aggregated feeds, either the Aggregator module (comes with Drupal core) or the more robust SimpleFeed may be needed.
You could use Taxonomy module (comes with Drupal) to categorize your site's content. For instance make a Vocabulary (top level category container) called Sections and inside it make Terms (sub-level categories with as many levels deep as you need) such as Scenery, Paint Booth, etc.
Though its UI is sub-par, for image handling within your content posts you may be best served with IMCE module for now. Hopefully Asset module will be ready for D6 soon.
Hope this helps you get started :)
