Issue Summary
Hi,
More modules are currently being submitted that involve some use of mobile devices. I am now publishing a new module that will be called mobile tools.
Some time ago I made a blog post on modules that are involved with mobile devices http://www.mobiledrupal.com/content/overview-mobile-modules-drupal showing that there is need to collect this kind of modules together and make sure that there is no duplication of modules.
Jooomla also has the mobile category ;)
Thx!
Tom

Can you post a comment in this thread with a list of links to drupal.org project pages that you think would belong in this category? That'd both help assess if this is a viable category, and it'd make it easier for d.o site admins to categorize the modules when/if the category is created. Please set this issue's status back to "active" once you supply the links. Thanks.

I think that's a great idea -- put all the mobile info in one place.
BTW:
I downloaded your Mobile Tools module and tried it out. I am not using the detection feature (although it did properly detect my Palm TX). I am using a subdomain mirrored to the main domain -- similar to the .mobi approach, but I don't have to pay for a second domain name ;-) Anyway, your module correctly detects when someone is accessing the site via the subdomain name and utilizes the selected theme (In my case, a customized version of the "mobile" theme).
Note:
(This doesn't necessarily apply to your module per se, but may come up for others trying to set up mobile sites, and it's something I didn't find documented anywhere.)
The only other issue I had was with people signing in from the mobile site. It worked for some, not for others. I tracked that down to the sites/default/settings.php file. Line 157 is:
# $cookie_domain = 'example.com';
Uncomment the line and change example.com to the correct url to make it accessible from any subdomain (ie www.example.com, m.example.com, mobile.example.com will all work)
Thankyou for your efforts. I think your module is a much better solution than the .mobi code hack I used on the previous D5 version of the site.

Thanks for the tip. Setting the cookie can be indeed helpful if someone is switching between the mobile and the normal site.
Let me know if you have problems with the module or have great ideas ;)

Is there someone who can take this post up and evaluate the need for a Mobile category for Drupal modules?
Thx,
Tom

Tom, I just about have a page ready that gathers that information. At the very least, it would show what there is for the category to gather. If a category can't be developed just yet, it could also be posted as a September 2009 review of the status of modules and themes relevant to mobile devices.
In addition to the themes and modules you have listed above, I found iDrupal (http://drupal.org/project/idrupal) and iDrupal UI (http://drupal.org/project/idrupal_ui). Does anyone know of other modules and themes that should be included?

@ddv: I thought I would add your tip about setting the cookie domain (#4) to the page I'm developing about mobile contribs for devices. Just so I understand clearly, what's the exact way that line should appear?
Are you saying that any one of these will work:
Or is it necessary to designate each url that you want to work? And, if so, what should that line of code look like?

I think that a category mobile would make sense.
I am going to add it; if anybody thinks it is not a good idea, please let me know.

I have created the taxonomy term (http://drupal.org/admin/content/taxonomy/edit/term/7404).
#11
@KiamLaLuno: thanks for doing that.
It'd be nice to assign at least the projects listed in comment #2 to the new term, if anyone's up for that.
#12
I will do that.
#13
I added the taxonomy term to all the listed modules; I didn't add the taxonomy term to the themes, as there aren't taxonomy terms that are child of themes.
Also, it seems there is a problem with taxonomy terms; the page that should list the nodes with the same taxonomy term doesn't list any nodes (compare http://drupal.org/taxonomy/term/7404, and http://drupal.org/project/mobile_theme). A bug report has been already open for another taxonomy term I added (see #579438: Odd behavior with taxonomy term pages).

@KiamLaLuno: In looking through the modules and themes related to mobile devices, I noticed that they fell into two distinct subcategories:
Is there any chance the taxonomy could group the modules accordingly?
Also, two weeks have passed without a response to the queries as to whether these projects are still being maintained, so I wonder whether we should even include them in this category:
