dear friends,

i am a new bee for drupal. by profession i am a professor in a college. as a add on to society and my students i am planning to develop a eguidance portal. in this portal i want to incorporate following features.
1: portal is open to anonymous as well as registered users.
2: registered users will be able to read the articles in full as well as anonymous user will read starting paragraph only.
3: articles will be stored in a database and will be divided in multiple sections like definition, features, advantages, disadvantages etc.
4: user will select his class and subject and reference material should be in front of him.
5: expected no or reference material is about 9000 to 10000.
6: users will interact with me via forum . this forum will provide the information to anonymous as well as registered users. of course registered users will get some more benefits like reediting, deletion of their own entry.
7: portal should be able to communicate all registered users whenever there is a new thread or answer on a concern basis.
8: publishing of site material must be in a simple manner. pls note i am not asking and demanding about the hosting problems.
9: administrator may contact and may be contacted by the users via email at anytime. incoming emails must be sorted in accordance to given criteria like newest first or email address or subject line.

pls be specific about the possibilities and limitations of the requirement in drupal.

thanks in advance.

I think almost all the requirements you have listed can be met by drupal and contributed modules. However, you will have to spend some time looking into various modules that are available and see what meets your requirements. I don't know if this would really be useful to you but you could also look at http://drupal.org/project/phpedu_profile

  1. core drupal
  2. http://drupal.org/project/premium
  3. core taxonomy and possibly http://drupal.org/project/cck fields as well
  4. same as 3, also http://drupal.org/project/views
  5. no problem (take a look at the node #'s on drupal.org)
  6. core forum, also consider http://drupal.org/project/advanced_forum and http://drupal.org/project/forum_access
  7. lots of methods: core triggers/actions, http://drupal.org/project/rules, http://drupal.org/project/notifications, http://drupal.org/project/subscriptions, etc
  8. not sure what you mean here, but if you mean entering of content see the http://drupal.org/project/wysiwyg and http://drupal.org/project/fckeditor modules
  9. core contact module or possible the http://drupal.org/project/webform module. The sorting of email has nothing to do with drupal-- that will be a function of whatever client app is used to read the emails.

Also, depending on whether or not you wish to group users you may want to consider the http://drupal.org/project/og module as well.

That's just some of the highlights. There are literally thousands of contrib modules available for drupal-- you'll want to browse them and see what's available.
