Colorbox now works in Media with a few caveats [#2066279]

With the latest release of Media, users can now do colorbox popups without the module I maintain, Media Colorbox. However, there seems to be a few strange issues with the following:

1. Popup a media_youtube video.
2. Use a normal colorbox caption like: http://www.jacklmoore.com/colorbox/example1/
3. Use additional fields on file entities in a popup.

If these few things worked in Media, the Media Colorbox module could be deprecated. Given the lack of interest to date and after some discussion with interested developers, this issue is probably best worked on in the Colorbox queue rather than the Media queue.

I'd suggest adding File entity integration to the Colorbox module; you should be able to accomplish all three items.

The Nivo Lightbox module I maintain supports #1 and #2 through integration with File entity.

Per Greg, I am posting an issue here that I originally posted on Media Colorbox: https://drupal.org/node/2149099

A good use case of my issue is for people posting a bunch of images in forums (via Advanced Forum). If embedded (the only working option at this point), viewers will have to keep scrolling down. If using Colorbox, they no longer have to (and it's more consistent with the rest of the site, assuming that it uses Colorbox throughout).

Not sure why this issue still stay open, should we keep it as a [Meta] - issue? The points in the original post from back in August 2013 is prob. still valid and should be addressed in separate issues right?

It's been a few months since I tested, but I believe no work on this issue has been done unless it was in another queue that I'm not following. To me, the only issue that I'd consider "broken" is that regular captions don't work. If that were fixed, media_colorbox could be deprecated because it's only needed for the deprecated media embed field type. The other two are more clearly feature requests.

Now that Colorbox works with media out of the box, many people who use Colorbox module are experiencing it with broken caption support and they don't realize what's going on unless they find this issue.
