After uploading and enabling any module, Open Atrium breaks completely. Please see the attached screenshots. The entire theme breaks and displays the following error:

Notice: Undefined variable: oa_toolbar_class in include() (line 15 of /profiles/openatrium/themes/oa_radix/templates/system/page.tpl.php).

A majority of OA modules are disabled after this. The situation can be resolved by running drush pm-enable oa_* .

UPDATE:
The bug is caused by the oa_update module which disables the modules described in #21 and itself. The attached patch is a quick and dirty fix that avoids breaking oa_update's functionality by simply bypassing the execution of the module's implementation of hook_update_projects_alter() on pages other than /admin/reports/*. While it solves the problem for now, this issue needs further review. The patch needs to be applied against oa_core (located in [website root]/profiles/openatrium/modules/contrib).

Screenshot two is what's displayed when trying to visit the homepage; forgot to clarify.

Seems a theme problem. Did you try to clear the cache after disabling Automatic Nodetitles? Seems impossible to me the site is still broken after disabling the module.
Try https://drupal.org/project/auto_entitylabel instead...

cgove’s picture

Same thing happened on my site after upgrading to 2.04 clearing caches, running update and simply enabling a module, in my case, Date Facets. Same as Brentnauer, I disabled the module and uninstalled it and the error remains. Additionally, after I enabled that module is it asked to rebuild permissions. The back-end returns the same error and looks the same:

Notice: Undefined variable: oa_toolbar_class in include() (line 15 of /var/www/my/profiles/openatrium/themes/oa_radix/templates/system/page.tpl.php).
Notice: Undefined variable: oa_toolbar_sticky in include() (line 15 of /var/www/my/profiles/openatrium/themes/oa_radix/templates/system/page.tpl.php).

The front end returns this error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function oa_users_picture() in /var/www/my/profiles/openatrium/modules/contrib/oa_core/oa_core.module on line 279

I looked in that file for that function and it appears it doesn't exist there.

I will restore from a backup to get going again. I'll wait to upgrade again till this issue is cleared up. Thanks.

Brentnauer’s picture

Automatic Entity Label appears to have the same result... Same error.

I tried clearing the cache once the module was disabled from Administration » Configuration » Development » Performance, but it had no effect

Ideas?

Brentnauer’s picture

@cgrove, so it's ANY extra module that causes this, not just the two I tried?

Yikes :( Puts a damper on the meeting plans I had for Monday.

@OA let me know if there's some way I can help.

Title: Installing Automatic Node Titles breaks Open Atrium » Installing module breaks Open Atrium

Same error with different modules.

Facun1’s picture

Same error after enabling any module, even in the core. Happening too at Pantheon.

Argus’s picture

Priority: Major » Critical

I guess that makes it critical.

Argus’s picture

Enabling the Open Atrium Domains module in 7.x-2.03 gives the same problem, so the bug was introduced in or prior to that version.

IgorD’s picture

Same error with any module.

sr78ger’s picture

Ran in the same issue by activating the markdown module. Even disable the module and drupal_flush_all_caches() didn't solve it for me, so open atrium is currently broken. Is there any quick fix to work around this?

Brentnauer’s picture

Likely not until tomorrow :(

m.schwarzenberg’s picture

Same issue here.
After I have added 2 modules the problem appears.

How can I login? '/user' or '/user/login' doesnt work...
I have modified some parameters at the content types before - and I have not backep up before this...

AndrewDev’s picture

Any ideas? Have a same problem and can't work with a system anymore...

adamgerthel’s picture

Have you tried to uninstall it via drush and then ran a registry rebuild?

damienmckenna’s picture

a) How were the new module(s) enabled - drush or via the admin/modules page?
b) Did anyone check if one of the required OA modules was inadvertently disabled?

jakimfett’s picture

No real ideas for you, but here's my 2cents on the problem. I'm running a fresh install of openatrium 7.x-2.04, with zero code changes.

First, it's not just when installing a module...you can trigger this error simply by going to the modules page on the default OA install and hitting the "Save Configuration" button. I immediately get the "content access permissions need to be rebuilt" error, and all the styling is gone from the site.

Once the site is broken, running the "Rebuild permissions" can reduce the number of errors, but the "Notice: Undefined variable: oa_toolbar_*" errors stick around, there's still no styling, and the system can't seem to find any pages.

The "Status Report" post-permissions-rebuild doesn't show anything wrong.

Manually downgrading the files to a previous version does NOT fix it after it's broken, but from a clean install I'm able to install modules without a problem on openatrium-7.x-2.0-core. I haven't tested any versions after 2.0, although I know that openatrium 7.x-2.x-dev does have this bug.

If you make a database backup *before* saving the configuration, you can revert the changes. Hypothetically, this means that you could enable modules by isolating the changes in the database from the module enable, and add them into a "known good" database, but the whole point of a CMS is *not* having to screw with the code or databases manually.

sr78ger’s picture

I enabled Markdown & OA Markdown via admin/modules page

sr78ger’s picture

@jakimfett I can confirm that. I've downloaded and installed openatrium-7.x-2.04-core.tar.gz After the module installation OA was broken. I moved the files away, extracted the tarball again and copied settings.php the new installation. But this solved nothing. Even cleaning the caches nothing changed.

damienmckenna’s picture

This really sounds like the requirements for one of the core modules is not being fully met, or there's a conflict between features, so when the modules page is submitted the system disables something.

Facun1’s picture

#16
I have seen at least the following modules were disabled:
- Views UI, Open atrium work tracker, Open atrium users, Open atrium Tour, Open atrium Tour defaults, OA subgroup intergration for spaces, Open atrium Styles, Open atrium search, OA sandbox, OA permissions, OA notifications, OA News, OA messages, OA messages digest, OA home, OA favorites, OA event import, OA diff, OA config,OA contextual tags, OA responsive regions, OA variable.

after enabling these modules, the page returns to its normal appearance, but at first the error message appears. However, when you activate a module (I tried the backup & migrate) the error message not reappeared and everything seems to work correctly

merauluka’s picture

I tried to enable Work Tracker Due Date and it warned me that I needed to enable Work Tracker first. When I told it to continue, this same issue cropped up. When I looked at my module page after, almost all of the Open Atrium core modules had been disabled. Also, the Panopoly modules had been disabled.

Facun1’s picture

Sorry for #21, but I have lost the admin button, the admin menu appears by url

drush pm-enable oa_* did it!

Argus’s picture

Issue summary: View changes
ralph.riedel’s picture

A couple of details:

  • The bug is reproducible in every environment (EDIT: In every environment that I have available right now, at least.) with OA versions 2.03 and 2.04 (more details below)
  • It is does not seem to be dependent on third party modules, simply enabling the Worktracker Due Date Module shipped with OA will trigger it
  • The bug seems to break the whole site, but what it really does (as far as I can tell now) is disabling a whole lot of modules (that's why reenabling them seems to fix it)

I still need to do a little bit of testing to actually verify it, but as of now it seems that this commit has introduced the whole mess which means that the oa_update module is responsible for all of it. I did a fresh install without installing oa_update and I did not encounter the problem anymore. That should more or less confirm it.

I am looking at the code right now and think I might have found the problem. I still need to verify and test it though before I can write and submit an actual patch.

For people that already have a "broken" site: Just reenable the Open Atrium modules and you should be fine (more or less). I'm not sure if it does not also disable other modules than the Open Atrium ones. You should also check that.

For people that want to (re)install Open Atrium right now: For now, I'd recommend undoing the commit that I linked to which means you simply have to open the openatrium.info file in [your site root]/profiles/openatrium folder and change the line
dependencies[] = oa_update
to
;dependencies[] = oa_update
which will prevent the oa_update module from being installed.

I'm looking to propose a fix for the actual module this evening, if my time allows it.

damienmckenna’s picture

Suggestion:

  • Run "drush pm-list --fields=name --status=enabled|sort" to get a list of modules that are currently enabled on a working install of OA.
  • Save the modules page.
  • Run "drush pm-list --fields=name --status=enabled|sort" again and see what has been disabled.
jcallanan’s picture

I re-installed after commenting out the oa_update dependency line in the openatrium.info file and the problem is no longer occurring.

m.schwarzenberg’s picture

For those who are not familiar with drush:

Is it enough to enable the modules 'oa_*' (or list of comment #21) manually via database/phpmyadmin - when first disable oa_update this way?

s. https://drupal.org/node/157632

ralph.riedel’s picture

Alright, a little update from my side now that I've looked into it. I still have not fully understood what's happening (and why) but the root of the problem appears to be the implementation of hook_update_projects_alter() in the oa_update.module file.
It disables quite some modules (including oa_update and therefore itself which is why the problem does not reappear anymore later), but I could not identify a pattern regarding which modules are affected. I wrote a quick SQL statement that counted 185 activated modules before the bug caused the damage and 143 afterwards (although that most likely includes the one I activated to triggered the bug). Unfortunately, I didn't write down the list of disabled modules and now my installation is gone. Will do that later if I remember to.
From my understanding, the code in this hook implementation is not intended to be executed on the admin/modules page as it does stuff that's meant to be done for the update functionality.

Therefore, I "fixed" it (quick & dirty) by wrapping the code in this hook with an if statement whose condition is true when the path is admin/reports/* as that is where the update magic happens.

I have never written a patch for Drupal before but will do that in the next hour or so, as soon as I have found out how that's done correctly.

The patch should fix the bug without breaking other functionality such as the Open Atrium Update (which is most likely the case when you just comment out the module prior to the installation like I proposed before as an immediate temporary fix).

However, I lack the deeper understanding of what's happening and what's actually intended, so this definitely still needs the attention of a maintainer/someone more experienced.

UPDATE: Temporary patch attached to the issue summary. Needs to be applied against oa_core.

ralph.riedel’s picture

@m.schwarzenberg:
The list in #21 names 22 modules which matches my observations. Manually reenabling them should be enough to fix the problem. Make sure, however, that you don't reenable oa_update as long as it is not fixed because otherwise, you'll run into the same problem again.

I kind of had a brainfart there, sorry. It does not match my observations, for me it seemed to disable 42 modules.

netdicted’s picture

Ralph, sorry it doesn't work for me. Could you be more specific on how to apply the patch that you've written.

wrap2’s picture

Worked for me. Thanks

flux423’s picture

Ralph, This worked for me also.

I had to run the patch in the folder path below for it to work. root/profiles/openatrium/modules/contrib/oa_core/modules/oa_update

Thank you for the work-around!

mpotter’s picture

Yeah, I need to find a real fix for this. It's unfortunate that the hook_update_projects_alter() has this side effect. The intention was to just hide oa_* modules from the Update module so it wouldn't try to get the status of modules that don't exist on drupal.org. Why this causes the modules to be disabled is beyond me.

But I'll try to post a fix to this asap and push a new release soon.

Thanks for the workarounds on this and sorry for not catching it sooner.

m.schwarzenberg’s picture

Website is running. But admin button is still missing, similar to #23 - Facun1
Also Module 'installprofiletest' is missing - Needed by OA_Devel. Has reenabled modules with 'oa_*' as #24. Will disable it manually and post the result.

wrap2’s picture

This list were modules enabled from in my original 2.0 that worked, and compared to the broken 2.04 after clicking submit in admin/module. In ~ column 18 there is an 'x' beside the 2.04 module that was disabled. Enabling these appears to fix all. The admin button reappeared too.

Disclaimer, what worked for me may not work for someone else. Hopefully useful to someone.

@netdicted:
Normally, you would need to place the .patch file in the [website root]/profiles/openatrium/modules/contrib/oa_core folder and apply it (for more information about how to do that, click here). flux423 wrote he had to go deeper down the directory tree to make it work so if the first approach does not work for you, you might as well try that.

jcallanan’s picture

The patch worked for me as well, but now I'm experiencing an ajax error when trying to make any changes to a dashboard layout via panels. Not sure if this is related, but I wasn't having this particular problem previously.

#32 patch working for me but I had problem with enabling all oa_*modules (or I've made some mistake during fighting with this problem), then I've discover #39 but I need to grep only modules names to be able to use them with drush. And finally I've made it. This is the command that RECREATE my precious [Admin] button.

drush en -y admin_views contextual_tabs ctools ctools_custom_content fape pm_existing_pages page_manager stylizer views_content defaultconfig bartik block color comment field field_sql_storage field_ui file filter image list menu node number options path search shortcut system taxonomy text update user date_all_day date_api date date_ical date_popup_authored date_popup date_repeat date_repeat_field date_views apps features features_override feeds conditional_fields entityreference field_group geofield link multiupload_filefield_widget flag trash_flag fullcalendar_colors fullcalendar fullcalendar_legend fullcalendar_options caption_filter image_resize_filter wysiwyg_filter mailsystem mimemail file_entity media_internet media media_vimeo media_youtube message_digest message message_notify message_subscribe message_subscribe_ui oa_responsive_regions oa_variables oa_admin oa_appearance oa_buttons oa_config oa_contextual_tabs oa_core oa_dashboard oa_date oa_diff oa_discussion oa_events_import oa_events oa_favorites oa_home oa_layouts oa_media oa_messages_digest oa_messages oa_news oa_notifications oa_panopoly_users oa_permissions oa_river oa_sandbox oa_search oa_sections oa_styles oa_subspaces oa_teams oa_users oa_wiki oa_worktracker_duedate oa_worktracker oa_section_context og_session_context og_menu_single og_variables og_access og_context og og_register og_subgroups og_ui og_vocab backports breakpoints chosen colorbox colorizer colors comment_alter dhtml_menu diff entity entity_token geocoder geofield_map geophp job_scheduler libraries linkit media_colorbox menu_block message_subscribe_email navbar module_filter oa_update oa_widgets pathauto realname reference_option_limit save_draft simple_gmap simplified_menu_admin strongarm tablefield token command_buttons fieldable_panels_panes panels_mini panelizer panels_breadcrumbs panels_customerror panels_ipe panels panopoly_admin panopoly_core panopoly_images panopoly_magic panopoly_pages panopoly_search panopoly_theme panopoly_users panopoly_widgets panopoly_wysiwyg search_api_db search_api search_api_facetapi search_api_views search_api_solr facetapi jquery_update options_element wysiwyg variable_realm variable_store variable views_autocomplete_filters views_bulk_operations views_load_more views_ui views

Most of the modules was already enabled but couple of them (oa_ as well see below) was missing. I hope this can be helpful for anyone.

Update: I was missing those:

(..)

The following extensions will be enabled: ctools_custom_content, fape, stylizer, color, shortcut, date_popup_authored, apps, features_override, multiupload_filefield_widget, message_subscribe_ui, oa_diff, oa_events_import, og_access, og_register, backports, breakpoints, message_subscribe_email, navbar, oa_update, oa_widgets, realname, simplified_menu_admin, panopoly_admin, panopoly_core, panopoly_images, panopoly_magic, panopoly_pages, bartik

Status: Needs review » Fixed

Just committed a fix for this to d62580d.

Please download the latest -dev version of oa_core and see if it fixes this problem. It won't re-enable things for you, so you'll still need to recover from that manually. Also be sure to clear the drupal cache.

Was not nearly so simple as only running on reports pages. To prevent module update messages, it still needs to run oa_update on other pages, including the modules page. Turns out the problem wasn't with anything oa_update was really doing (like remove the OA modules from the list). The problem was calling the system_rebuild_module_data() function from oa_update while on the modules page. Calling this system function completely messes up the internal form_state in a very weird way. I didn't drill into exactly what this function is doing wrong. Instead, I just build the correct entry for the openatrium profile module manually.

Definitely a pain to fix (8 hours of debugging there). The way the Update module works is so annoying sometimes. You'd think it would be easier to say "give me the update status of module xyz".

Going to mark this as fixed, but please re-open if it's still an issue. Will try to roll out a new OA2 release tomorrow.

Just tried it, can confirm that this fixes it.

Thanks!

I was painfully remembered to the big '3 B' of computing: Backup, Backup, Backup. ;-)

For those who have lost their tamper ('bullshit') because they have lost some hours keep in mind that OA2 has taken nearly one year to reach this status!!

Creating a new release to fix this is currently blocked by #2133809: Can not create releases on a new project. Added a Note to the OA2 project page to warn people about this bug and encourage people to backup their DB.

@mpotter

Thank you sir! Ur0x

Although now I'm getting an error on install FYI

Required modules Required modules not found.
The following modules are required but were not found. Move them into the appropriate modules subdirectory, such as sites/all/modules. Missing modules: Oa_htmlmail

***edit***
It worked out. The dev version doesn't install by simply extracting the files and renaming the root folder. I tarred the 2.04 version, renamed the root folder, blah..blah...blah. Then tarred the dev folder and did an rsync -a /devfolder /wwwroot and seems to be working fine so far. I've added a module and enabled it without the problems we were experiencing before. Continuing to get intermittent errors where OA is trying to disable the core openatrium because it can't find oa_htmlmail...looks like one of the commits from yesterday.

cgove’s picture

Also seeing the oa_htmlmail error on module install with the current dev.

Some required modules must be enabled
You must enable the Open Atrium Updater module to install OpenAtrium.
The oa_htmlmail module is missing, so the following module will be disabled: openatrium.
Would you like to continue with the above?

mpotter’s picture

You cannot trust any of the releases from drupal.org, not even the -dev version. The only way to get the correct files is via git directly. Go to the Version History tab of the oa_core module and copy/paste the "git clone" command and use that to download the latest files.

The oa_htmlmail module is in the oa_core /modules directory. So somehow you are still getting the wrong set of files.

The Release system is looking a bit better today so I will continue to try and get an updated version released.

drupert55’s picture

In trying to obtain the oa_htmlmail module, I ran the following per the instructions at https://drupal.org/project/openatrium/git-instructions:

git clone --branch 7.x-2.x http://git.drupal.org/project/openatrium.git

I did not get a complete distribution nor was the oa_htmlmail in the modules folder. I only saw the following in that modules folder:

oa_analytics
oa_devel
oa_markdown

What to try next?

Thanks.

Hi,
i wanted to try atrium, but for the moment I also receive:

Required modules Required modules not found.
The following modules are required but were not found. Move them into the appropriate modules subdirectory, such as sites/all/modules. Missing modules: Oa_htmlmail

I'll try other ticketing projects in the mean time.

cgove’s picture

@drupert55 to build OA2 from git you will need Drush and use the command drush make:

drush make [-options] [filename.make] [build path]

mpotter’s picture

drupert55: oa_htmlmail is a submodule of oa_core.

In any case, now that the 2.09 version of Open Atrium is finally released, please use that instead of the -dev version.

The -dev version will continue to have the oa_htmlmail problem until drupal.org updates it. The 2.09 version is all fixed.

houstoniasian’s picture

I use the 2.09 version (just download it today 11/21/2013) and as soon as I enable a module (Administration Development tools & Administration menu), admin/people Page not Found.

Argus’s picture

@houstoniasian I repeated enabling those modules (on a fresh installation on Pantheon) and don't get any error's.

chuntley’s picture

I had the same problem as #55, with the People page not found, but only on XAMPP. It worked fine on my linux box.

drupert55’s picture

Thanks for the updated version. Also, thanks for the other replies regarding this issue.

Q: Where do I download the Drush module? The Git site https://github.com/drush-ops/drush is unclear as the later versions show build|error.

Thanks.

mpotter’s picture

If you ever get admin/people page not found, you need to Clear the Drupal cache. In fact, after enabling or disabling modules you need to clear the Drupal cache. Drupal does not do this for you.

I won't reopen this issue -no time for a full assessment nor for reading it all... But I'd just want to report the same thing has happened to my OA site running latest version (2.21)

After updating and manually enabling some other module: All OA modules disabled + Getting "Error: Class 'oa_date_handler_field_date' not found" + Many of the notices above.
This left the site in an unrecoverable state -using the UI-, I've needed drush and patience to restore it.

It looks like my mistake was not doing a full cache clear after some code update (other contrib modules, not OA). But anyway I'd say there's something broken with OA module management and also that 'oa_date_handler' unresolved dependency, which can really break your site.

luco’s picture

hello, I can confirm cache clearing resolved for me - running OA 7.x-2.23. thanks.

adamtyoung’s picture

Grrr. I'm seeing this exact problem ('oa_date_handler_field_date' not found') on *.26 after installing some new modules. Major deal breaker.

mpotter’s picture

Please see above, clear cache, etc. Do not open old issues like this. Report problems in new issues and provide more details about reproducing your problem to get help.
