BOA | Barracuda | Octopus | Hostmaster | Hosting | Provision | Eldir
BOA stands for Barracuda, Octopus and Ægir — a high-performance, self-hosted LEMP hosting stack for everything Drupal, from Pressflow 6 to the latest Drupal 11, plus Backdrop CMS.
Barracuda installs and upgrades the server stack — Nginx, PHP-FPM (8.5/8.4/8.3 by default, per-site selection from 5.6 to 8.5), Percona Server, Valkey, Apache Solr — together with the Ægir Master Instance. Octopus creates and updates any number of isolated Ægir Satellite Instances on the same server, each with its own control panel and its own set of Drupal and Backdrop CMS platforms. The BOA installer runs both to build the complete system, and automated system and OS upgrades keep it current for years.
Actively developed. The current release is BOA-5.88.8 Continuity Edition (July 2026): 422 commits across six repositories, adding first-class Backdrop CMS hosting, a Drupal 6 → 7 → Backdrop upgrade chain, wholesale import of classic Ægir servers, and much more. All of BOA is Free/Libre Open Source; the LTS edition is free for everyone, while the commercial PRO edition funds development.
