I would like to see the ability for the editable field to be displayed normally on view, and a Edit button displayed next to it. Click the Edit button, and ajax renders the field editabale.

I think, that should be the normal behavior especially for Image Fields.

Sounds like you are describing functionality that is already in this module. Did you see the "click-to-edit" option under display fields on the node type? Or under the field format in views?
