It seems that there were several modules for shortening URLs available in Drupal 7. There is actually a development branch for Shurly on modern drupal. However, Shurly does not allow for creating redirects from an internal link. Short Alias takes a different approach, building on top of the capabilities of the redirect module. In addition, to providing a short url, this module also provides the ability to display the Short Alias on the entity.
