This module extends the "mass subscribe" form that is already in the Simplenews module. As far as I know it's only possible to fill in the email address for subscribers that are subscribed this way. Other fields on the subscriber entity are left empty.
The file upload in the form that this module provides allows you to upload a CSV file that can contain values for each field on the subscriber entity. The form also provides a link to a blueprint for the CSV file. This blueprint is based on the fields that you have added to the subscriber entity, so it will probably differ from the screenshot on this page.
Batch API
It uses a batch for importing the subscribers, so it can handle quite large files.
