Earl Miles named one of 2008 Open Source CMS Most Valued People by Packt Publishing

Amazon - October 27, 2008 - 13:35

This morning Earl Miles, also known as merlinofchaos, was named one of the 2008 Open Source CMS Most Valued People. Earl won specifically for his contributions to the Drupal project.

What is particularly exciting about this award is that Earl is the third Drupal community member to win an award for their contributions to the Drupal project this year. Bryan Ruby said it best.

What I found interesting is that most of the MVPs for projects were the projects' lead/founder. Perhaps that says something about Drupal truly being community driven.

Please congratulate Earl on a well deserved award for his contributions and leadership to the Drupal project. You can read Earl's response on his blog Angry Donuts.

Awesome!

Michelle - October 27, 2008 - 13:45

Well deserved indeed. Though there are thousands of contributors to Drupal, there are only a handful who's contributions are so significant that Drupal itself would be dramatically different without them. Thank you for all your hard work!

strong community

Congratulations Earl!

The recognition of Earl Miles, Angie Byron, Dries and others shows the strength of the Drupal project and the community. Bryan Ruby is right... we don't have just one star, we have a whole Zodiac of constellations.

Drupal Rocks

BryanSD - October 29, 2008 - 00:48

I really do think Drupal is one of the most "open" communities which allows those new contributors to rise quickly when they have something of value to give. Not every open source project is that open.

By the way, congratulations Earl!

dwees - October 27, 2008 - 14:46

I definitely think congratulations are in order. Views 2 is very, very useful and indispensable for Drupal.

I'm not sure I agree with this one quote from the page linked though:

"Johan is the man behind the amazing architecture design of the only PHP based CMS with a solid development framework."

Although I'm sure Johan deserves his award, doesn't Drupal have "a solid developmental framework"?

Those are labeled as "community quotes" and probably came from the nominations.

wow-- truly amazing and well deserved. And it does testify to the fact that drupal is more truly a product of its community than any other OS CMS.

Congrats merlin!

Back when Earl was lowly and unknown, I wrote a review of his views modules which he was struggling to get publicity for: http://drupal.org/newsletter/2005/winter. Ever since I wrote that and introduced the world to his genius, it was nowhere else but up for Earl. :)

Thanks, Earl, for all your contributions. It really means a lot to us. You are making huge differences in our lives.

YAY EARL!!!

webchick - October 28, 2008 - 14:30

This award could not possibly be more well-deserved.

Your modules, as well as core contributions, are legendary and have launched the Drupal project light-years ahead in terms of the complexity of sites we can build today, and speed with which we can build them. Not content to just build awesome tools, you've also made huge strides to make them usable by mere mortals; you have pioneered some awesome UI ideas and processes for fleshing them out in a community-driven way. Not to mention your admin backend improvements, theme system improvements, and 10,000 other things I'm forgetting now since there are so many instances of ass-kickingness from you.

And while that would be enough to give anyone an ego the size of a mid-size state, instead you maintain an approachable, down-to-earth nature and desire to help people. You tirelessly tend to your modules' epic issue queues, and consistently churn out more and more awesome stuff for the use of everyone in the community.

The Drupal project truly would not be anywhere near what it is today without you, and we're very lucky to have you as part of our community. Rock on, Earl!! :D

For me personally, you are one of the people that drew me into this community. I was a bumbling, hesitant newbie and you took me seriously and worked to help and teach me. I'll never forget that and I'm glad many, many other people recognize your worth to this community and Open Source in general.

Thanks Earl.

Views and Panels at the same time, pretty darn amazing accomplishment. Almost scary smart :-).

I know I must drive you nutty at times with my embarrassing simple questions; thank you for your patience

Thank you for two incredible modules that allow us with no code knowledge, to create some hot websites. When I replaced my front page with a 3 column flex panel for the first time and in about 30 minutes, I was so amazed I woke up in the middle of night and had to see it again.
