Hi am just installed Drupal 5 and have it almost configured and ready. My last thing is a newsletter program, but I do not see anything that works for Drupal 5! I have been looking at phplist - but there again there is nothing for Drupal 5 and phplist. Any ideas?

Just putting in my two cents. I'm looking for a solution for my band's site. I'd lke to have a free standing email subscriptions list on pages like myspace, sonicbids and other sites we use (indepentent from our drupal site) The most important part of this mail subscriber would be that we can collect the subscriber's zip code. This will allow us to mail subscribers in specific cities when we have events in their area.

PHPlist has the ability to do this, but there doesn't seem to be any solution for integrating it in a drupal 5.0 site.

If anyone knows of any solutions to look into, please share.

I've been using mailman_manager (http://drupal.org/project/mailman_manager) with Drupal 5.1 and am pretty happy with it. Mailman is a bit of a pain to setup for announce-only lists, but it can be done (google for directions). And once setup, mailman works well. Seems to me to be the cannonical mail list server.

I have an account at site5.com which is an inexpensive way to get as many mailman lists as you want, so long as they are small-ish (<1000 subscribers I think). I don't use site5.com for drupal anymore (too much down time) but for this they are fine.

I think Mailman is the way to go for two-way lists like email-based forums. What I'm looking for is a newsletter send-manager, a one-way list, except for user account management (unsubscribe, subscribe, etc...) I'm pretty sure PHPList is the better option for this type of task, but maybe I'm wrong?

There is no question in my mind that either Mailman or PHPList can do one-way lists reasonably well. PHPList is dedicated to one-way and is probably easier wrt configuring your list.

I really don't know which is better. PHPList is one-way only, while Mailman can do one-way or discussion. I like tools I can re-use. Mailman is definitely less resource intensive and seems more mature and robust. Just my impressions.

My main experience with PHPList was through the drupal massmailer module, which I get to work, but it was a bear to setup too. And it didn't survive an upgrade cycle. So, I went with Mailman. I doubt I'll go back and I can be confident my list will work, even if I should break my drupal!

The only real downside I can see is configuring your mailman list for one-way. They really should have a template solution for this, but they don't AFAIK. This is a one-time thing tho, so I don't mind so much if it isn't plug and go. Somewhere I found a nice, screen-by-screen howto which I followed. Has worked great for me, but I can't find that howto just now.

I think this is one of those choices that depends on exactly what you need it for. For me, I'm happy with mailman.

I'm looking at mailman now, which doesn't look too promising. It actually appears quite cryptic and I'm not finding a solid support forum. Unfortuantely my band doesn't have a budget for things of this sort, however I'd interested in helping pay for this solution if the cost was reasonable. So I'll shoot you an email.

Does anybody know if any of the cited solutions – MailMan or PHPList, with correspondent modules that integrate them to Drupal – would allow sending different Drupal node types as newsletters? I.e., when I create a node, I could choose an option like 'send this node as newsletter', instead of creating the node and after then create a newsletter saying 'please visit that node'.

There is a way of sending out new content from your site to your users with the Actions, Workflow modules, and a two-way mailing list service like MailMan. Jeff from Lullabot did a podcast on how to do this: http://www.lullabot.com/videocast/drupal_actions_and_workflow_video

It sure would be sweet to have a phplist module. I installed phplist to my server very easily, and I wish they had a feature that you could just send an e-mail to the list and everyone would get it. That way user with certain permission could send out e-mails through the drupal site to the mailing list of the site. It would be great, and very easy to set up. There is a thread about this in their forums: http://forums.phplist.com/viewtopic.php?p=33178#33178
If there is a phplist module for Joomla then it should be possible to have one for Drupal, and people are willing to pay money for it.

Now I'm going to try to install MailMan, but I've read that it's a lot harder than phplst.

If there is already a module that connects with their API, perhaps it wouldn't be too hard to make it work on Drupal 5. I don't have time to give it a try right now, but might when I have less work. If anyone gets it working on 5, please post a response.

It would make the possibility of having an external mail list work with Drupal that is very easy to setup, and would be very attractive for new Drupal users.

I totally agree that having PHPLIST integrated via a module in Drupal would be... like someone mentioned earlier "the bomb".

Drupal users and admins would enjoy a very powerful solution for managing newsletters too in a very professional manner.

I, for one, unfortunately don't have the resources to go and develop the idea, but the hotshot developers that could would be infinitely thanked for this very promising contribution in more ways than they can think by the whole Drupal community.

I've been providing Drupal solutions for some time, and so far, the lack of an integrated "good" tool to manage newsletters efficiently is becoming more and more of a real burden. Yes, there are some tools but unfortunately none are as complete as PHPLIST.

On the other side, for more classic sites (non Drupal), I have been using PHPLIST and it's so far THE best and most complete complete open source solution. It fully manages the newsletters. As many as you need too. It has become a very well maintained and fully trusted solution through the years.

So yes... both of them combined would be a real big plus for the community. And it would certainly get a lot of attention!

Any hotshot developers with some good knowledge of Drupal and PHPLIST reading?

I tried installing phpList in a dir within my sites root, but was never able to get it to work. I tried various .htaccess solutions but nothing worked. So I'm left with creating another stand-alone cPanel account (creating a unique webspace) to install phpList on, then link to it from the original account (again, a distinct webspace).

I wanted to do something that would more tightly integrate with the existing Drupal installation. But I've found little usable documentation and I don't want to burn any more time than I already have. I wish developers would focus their kung-fu on integrating phpList with Drupal (5+) for the good of the Drupal community. While I'm not sufficiently skilled to make this happen, I could certainly help with testing.

If I could get CiviMail to work, I'd probably go that way, but does not look good at the present with my level of expertise in a shared hosting environment. Are others interested in a CiviCRm and PHPList integration. At least I could get PHPList to send out an email.

I have developed a module which allows partial integration with phpList. It requires a working version of phpList to be installed somewhere, and for the Drupal system to have access to the MySQL database (or the phpList tables can even be in the same database).

The features I have so far are:

- Synchronisation of Drupal accounts TO phpList (per-user and a bulk update)
- Synchronisation of Drupal roles to phpList attributes (to enable role-based sending of emails)
- Synchronisation of HTML/Text format preferences of users
- Display of available mailing lists within Drupal with (un)subscribe options) - logged in users only

The work of creating and sending the mailshots, managing the bounces and defining mailing lists all happens within phpList itself. Non Drupal users can still use the standard phpList pages for (un)subscribing to mailinglists. Perhaps not the tidiest way of doing it, but I will shortly be adding the anonymous (un)subscribe screen to the Drupal module, along with the FORWARD option.

If anyone is interested, I am very happy to contribute this to the community. I've not done so before so I'd need to work out how to...

No, but I'm sure I have already seen a module that does that - adds a "send this page to a friend" type link to any node page. I think it might even just be called 'forward'. The forwarding I am referring to is a link that phpList can embed in mailshots to allow the recipient of a message to click it and be taken to a page where they can supply the email address of the person they want to forward the message to. The phpList server then takes charge of sending a copy of that mailshot to the requested recipient. Now that I think about it though, I'm not sure why this would be a useful feature - after all, it's probably less hassle to just forward it from your mail client than go to another web site!?

I'll do my utmost to get the module uploaded to CVs before the weekend and then all interested parties can start playing with it.

The CVS admin has got back to me asking for more details on the need for the module: "Could you provide more information on phpList and also explain why the subscriptions module didn't do what you need in this case."

I wasn't aware of the subscriptions module, so I have downloaded it to see what it does. These seem to be th main things that phpList addesses that subscriptions doesn't do, although I guess it is still debatable as to whether I should extend subscriptions rather than integrate phpList:

1. phpList handles bounces

2. phpList can still be used as a mailshot system independently of Drupal - useful if the Drupal site is not the only source of emails

3. phpList can "push" emails to Drupal users based on their roles OR let them "pull" emails via subscribe-only lists. Subscriptions seems to be a "pull" system only, where the users have to subscribe - no opportunity to send unsolicited emails

4. phpList provides finer control over the sending of the emails - limiting the message send rate, notifying the administrator when the send if complete

5. phpList provides tracking of who reads the message

6. phpList can send PDF versions of the emails

7. phpList doesn't just send a link (as I think subscriptions does), but a complete HTML page, along with personnalised fields if required

Anyone care to add any extra points to this list before I reply to the Drupal guys?

And what about the possibilities of templating different newsletters and choosing the group of users you want to send to based on many record types.

I would also add another point based on my own experience.

With PHPList, I never had any problems with newsletters sent to the users that looked like spam.
To all the users independently of where they have their accounts. The emails were never reported as spam.

Users with Hotmail or Yahoo accounts receive all the newsletters correctly. And Gmail has never been a problem.

On the other hand, for some reasons, newsletters submitted by our Drupal installs rarely get to the Hotmail accounts due to MS implementing very strict spam filters. Although I have researched the subject extensively during the last few months, there is apparently no good, simple or unique solutions in view (that I know of...). In fact, I tried most of them... like patches to Drupal, including external solutions like adding SPF records to our DNS servers, registering to SenderID, and finally trying to get somekind of support from MS (still no responses from them at all in a few months).

PHPList is a recognized and complete application in this particular domain.
Why reinvent the wheel? Further, to get to the point PHPList is at today, it would certainly require lots and lots of effort.
In my own opinion, Drupal's reputation would be enhanced if PHPList could be integrated via a module.

Chalk up one more HUGE YES vote for a PHPList module.

Interesting that the subscription module would be used as a cause for not having a PHPList integration module...

I for one would love a way to use PHPList to process ALL of Drupal's outbound messages if possible, but ESPECIALLY outbound messages from the Subscription module.

THE REASON: PHPList handles throttling and works around the limitations enforced by any given hosting company. For example, HostGator allows no more than 200 outbound messages per hour, and no more than one every 6 seconds. I could see a Drupal site becoming popular and exceeding that limit very quickly if people are subscribing to nodes. Routing all outbound messages through PHPList, whether from the system (signup), the subscription module, eCommerce order confirmations, etc... that would definitely ease that nagging worry in the back of my mind.

Final PHPList plug... it's not just about limiting bandwidth to stay within the TOS of your hosting company... certain domains will flag you as spam if you exceed their restrictions on INCOMING mail as well. Send a few thousand emails to aol.com within an hour's time and you'll get tagged as a spammer in no time. Again, per-domain throttling is something that PHPList will handle for us.

Running a simple list to send occasional mailings is far more different animal than managing huge number of huge mailing lists professionally.

Everyone taking a look at the features of PHPList will see the need and possibilities of integration of Drupal & PHPList. Some other main Open Source Projects have seen the need as well. I'm more than happy willing to donate something if it helps to speed the development up.

Hi, count me in, very interested. I am a Drupal newbee and nothing I have seen so far via modules will meet my needs. I use phplist and a module for 5.x and yes 6.x around the corner would be out of this world and if I did not have to reduplicate the users I already have subscribed to the newsletters of my phplist that would be great.

I am now setup by Drupal as a contributor - the justifications seem to have convinced them - so I just need to set to and get the current version uploaded to CVS. I have passed the code through the Drupal code cleaner module and tweaked a couple of things here and there, but it is basically ready to play with. There's quite a bit of documentation to plough through with regards to being a contributor - something I aim to do as well as I can - so bear with me while I work through it.

I will endeavour to get the code online by the end this week.

Hi, best of luck to you Paul. I have a question about phplist. I know this is probably not the place, but it sounds like a lot of you have it working. I need to set up the cron job and I just can not get it to go. using cpanel I get a big error send from cron:

I hope PHPList will soon start adding an autoresponder to their application (simply a way to send a new subscriber a series of emails at precise intervals starting from the day of their subscription)

Hi all,

It turned out that there was a bug in the initial version of the module which prevented the adminster menu item ever appearing after the module was installed. I have now updated the version in CVS so that this no longer happens - once the module is installed you should get a 'phpList' option under 'Site configuration'. Apologies to anyone who has been wondering why on earth there seemed to be nowehere to go after installing the module!

On a separate issue, is anyone familiar enough with CVS and the way Drupal uses it to help me get the module tagged in CVS. I have been attempting to use Eclipse and/or the command line to get the current version tagged as HEAD, so that it appears on the project home page, but I keep getting the error 'pre-tag check failed'. Despite multiple attempts to get in touch with them, the Drupal CVS team seem too busy to help. Can we crack this on our own??

I know this isn't a support forum, but I figured it has the most relevant eyes on it.
I installed phplist, but I'm having trouble linking to it. When I synchonize, I get a bunch of warnings saying:
user warning: Table 'drupal.phplist_user_user' doesn't exist query: SELECT id FROM phplist_user_user WHERE email='myemailaddr'
in /home/webadmin/mywebsite.com/html/includes/database.mysqli.inc on line 151.
My phplist database name is phplist. I have this set in the configuration page as well. What am I doing wrong?

I'm assuming that massmailer was for Drupal 5.x. When I tried to compile it, I got the warning:
warning: opendir(modules/massmailer) [function.opendir]: failed to open dir: Permission denied in /home/webadmin/mysite.com/html/includes/file.inc on line 641.

I have just seen that Massmailer has been released for Drupal 5 and, whilst I haven't tried it myself, I propose that I drop my module and that we all stick with Massmailer, given that it has been around so much longer and 'as I understand it) supports more of the phpList features within a Drupal environment.

Here's my two cents,

I don't see why you should drop your project. Both seems to be in a really inicial phase (the new Massmailer even more, since it still hasn't it's own project page).

I'd like to see basic documentation stating what each module does. I'd really like to use either one of them, but I still don't know how they work.

From what it looks like, your PHPList integration is way ahead of massmailer (maybe not in features, but in support and potential userbase).

If you have the time and drive to keep working on it, my vote is do it! This is a great module needed by many people (as evidenced in this topic). Having a direct integration with PHPlist also seems better than having to go through mailman and then whatever else must be configured as well.

just my 2cents... keep up the good work!

Lets put it this way, would this module be better than massmailer? Do you want to succeed than massmailer, if you believe you can, we can support you, else, you could join the massmailer module and work on integrating it into phplist fully.

I would rather see this module integrate smoothly into PHPlist, i am not sure what the purpose of massmailer is, the more specific the module is the better.

Just by the title of this module, it means you want to integrate PHPlist into Drupal, keep it up! I have never used your module(I am planning to use it sometime), again, keep it going, until mass massmailer becomes a module killer for PHPlist. We support you!

Hi,
You do not have the php command line executable in your system path and it cannot be located in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin.
Please edit the modules/massmailer/engines/phplist/bin/phplist file to correct this.

Possible causes of this error:
Your server has the PHP CGI interface installed and configured for your site instead of the PHP Command Line interface
When the PHP Command Line interface cannot be found.
To solve the problem:
You need to contact your host to have the PHP Command Line Interface installed or configured for phplist.

When I login, I can run php from the command line. Is php-cli different?

I still didn't understand how to get this to work. Once I go to "Massmailer settings", I don't have any "mailer engine" to choose. I suppose I'm missing something. Is there another module I should add?

I couldn't even get it to the point where I could do the massmailer settings. It doesn't show up on administration->modules to enable it.
As for the engine, it was already part of the zip file I had.

I'm still hunting for a solution to the problem. I'm not sure what massmailer does that's so wonderful. I was able to get the phplist module to work, but there were some things I'd like for it to do. So, I'm in no-man's land regarding which route to go.
Simplenews is nice in terms of it integrating fully with Drupal, and I was able to put a newsletter signup on the registration.
However, I like the template that phplist supports, in that I just type [Content] where content is supposed to go. However, I'd like to have multiple [Content] fields for my newsletter. I'm thinking of modifying simplenews to do that. I'm assuming that's a viable way to go, since I don't currently know which is best, simplenews or phplist.

I'm rambling, but it's therapeutic.

Please make sure PHPlist is working fine
Please checking the PHPList command line:

if it is not still working you should remove all tables of the PHPList module in the database then re install it. You can also manually create those tables.

and I see that u have ur admins resize pictures manually before uploading them... why not use imagecache?

Hi,

having read this thread I am not sure what's the status of this. Is there a working php list integration module?

If not, I would be interested in supporting such a development financially if needed.

Yes, for Drupal 8 and newer, there is the Webform phpList module. It’s working now, and is under active development. You can request features.

Been using phplist for years, wish we had a module that plays with core, not webform. Ideally change list dependent on role.
