hello.

anybody planning / working on translating drupal 6 to Arabic?

I think this will be a very demanded feature now that drupal officially supports right to left languages.

I intend to do core at minimum. I also hope that with the planned translation server will make it easier for more people to commit smaller amounts of work more easily, in addition to it making it easier to coordinate work. I am looking forward to D6 being the last one I do alone.

As far as I know, there have been no POTs, no templates to translate from. Has this changed in D6RC1?

I'll see what I can do... I'll revise the current Arabic PO and try to fill in the spaces...

I truly think that a shared site will be a great idea to coordinate efforts, I may install drupal 6.x on my subdomain for experimental purpose. will it work?

@rouand any updates you would like to share with us? It would be good to post the strings here and let us share the workload.

Alternatively you can create a wiki style post at: http://groups.drupal.org/arabization

Hi saeedahmeds,

Thanq for the great file but i think you should have attached it as .tar.gz as Translations page says

I unziped it and tried it but still not 100%, or at least on my site! Anybody tried it there?!
Some missing translations under "../admin" page.

Btw, with the .tar.gz file & from TERMINAL or command line, perform this tar -xzvf ar-6.x-1.x-dev_06_08_08.tar.gz to let everything goes AUTOmatically to its place without having to do it manually!!

Hi errement,

i really don't know which "Some missing translations under "../admin" page." you were talking about. Since we are using the same files which are shared and its exactly 99.9% done as u can see in the attached picture below as well. If you still think there is something missing please locate us to the exact file so we can fulfill the gap.

Our Friend Mr. Ahmed Jamil Hadi (ahadi@bluead.biz) have given a lot of time and dedication to fully translate this for us, plus the reviewing even after you mentioned that there is something missing in the files, but sorry we could not find anything yet as said.

@saeedahmeds, since the translation is not 100% we can't label this issue fixed. A huge thank you for the work involved by your team.

Now we need to locate the last remaining strings before this translation can be committed.

mohammed76’s picture

hi.

but at least you could commit this as a dev version, it's already more complete than the availlable one.

I will try to see why it won't show 100% though.

saeedahmeds’s picture

Thanks Mohammed,

well i would like to commit it as dev version, but really i did not know how to get access for uploading it and doing so.

Response to saeedahmeds #9:

First of all i wish to thank you for your response.

I installed a couple of demo sites to try out what you said and i get this:

Drupal 6.3 or Drupal 6.4 w/Clean install:

1- Selecting arabic for installation = 2218/2266 (97.88%)
2- Selecting english for installation + enable Locale.module + add Arabic language (importing 16 interface translations) + English language as default = 2218/2221 (99.86%)
3- Selecting english for installation + enable Locale.module + add Arabic language (importing 16 interface translations) + Arabic language as default = 2218/2231 (99.42%)

I attach a couple of photos for you to check, also the admin page to know what i say.

Also wanted to ask you, what version of drupal are you installaing and why do you get 3039/3042 (99.9%) ? Anybody get what i have?! THX…

Again thanks to you and great job to your friend ahmed ;-)

Ramadan Karim to all!!

Hey guys,

Just wondering if there has been any progress with the 6.x drupal arabic translation? anyone know (or can guess) when we could expect a final release?

Cheers guys.

bsnodgrass’s picture

I pulled off the dev version for 6.x-1.x-dev dated 2008-Nov-14 from the project page, installed and refreshed. I get a 32.39% completion on the admin/build/translate url on my site.

Should I be able to get a better result per this discussion?

detail on admin/build/translate:
Language Built-in interface Blocks Content type Menu Taxonomy
Arabic 1736/5359 (32.39%) 0/0 (0%) 0/78 (0%) 0/35 (0%) 0/0 (0%)

Emad’s picture

try the one attached to this discussion http://drupal.org/files/issues/ar-6.x-1.x-dev_27_08_08.zip by saeedahmeds
they refuse it because it's not 100% only 99.9% !! but no one provide better so far.

bsnodgrass’s picture

Sorry, I must be missing something I've tried numerous times to apply this file. Basically I am unzipping the file in the root drupal folder. I've deleted the language and added the language. I've also tried to import the translation file.

A number of different attenpts, all with the same result. I still have the following information in overview.

Language Built-in interface Blocks Content type Menu Taxonomy
Arabic 1836/5412 (33.92%) 0/0 (0%) 0/78 (0%) 0/35 (0%) 0/0 (0%)

Discussions via email with Emad leads me to believe my low percentage is the result of having so many contributed modules. Core modules are all that are included in the translation, that had not dawned on me.

sorry folks it seems drupal.org changed the way issues work and I stopped receiving email alerts of new issues months ago.

thanx saeedahmeds for your effort, although I must say the translations are of extremely poor quality (and plain broken in many cases).

but since things have been very stagnant for half a year (all the previous translators are yet to actually use drupal 6) I decided to merge saeedahmeds translations anyway and would appreciate any help reviewing them.

Hi everyone,

I just started using Drupal recently and I like it a lot. I'm from Syria, I think I can help with Arabic translation if you need any help.

I'm a newbie in Drupal and using Drupal 6, so If you do need help please explain to me how this works and what I should do!

Anyways thanks for the effort.

I'm back guys and restarted the development of my drupal site.
I understood that drupal 6.x localisation method has changed since the old *.po files and has become module dependant.
I'm very much worried about sharing the Arabic terms used in localisation sinse some colleagues use different synonyms for the same word resulting lots of confusion.
I myself can't approve terms that I find misleading or not common for me and specially those affecting user interface for i can bypass those dedicated for administrators.
so it will be of great benefit to dedicate wiki or something like to share and confine used terms and synonyms I wounder if the localisation server project offers such environment http://drupal.org/project/l10n_server
for my, I'll give it a try

rouand’s picture

I found this http://drupal.org/node/12890 helpful, I'll try it and see what I find

N2H’s picture

Please can someone help me …
now we must organize and working together, Get started by creating a list of frequently Terms Used In Drupal
The following is a list of termsthat are commonly found in Drupal and brief descriptions of the terms
I would like to know what you think, Please Give your Opinion
download PDF check the words in red

alaa’s picture

we already have a drupal terminology file @ http://translate.arabtechies.net/ar/terminology/drupal/ar.po/export/po it has not just drupal terms but also generic and computing terms widely used within drupal (useful for translation tools that have terminology support).

the file reflects the terminology already in use for 5 and 4.x translations.

Folks-

Thank you all for your efforts to help translate Drupal into v6. However, this thread is already over TWO YEARS old, Drupal 7 is around the corner, and we still don't have Arabic.

Is there anything I can do to help this process? How soon can we get this done?

I'm a non-native speaker of Arabic that is willing to do whatever I can to get this done asap. I speak basic Arabic, but I can try to gather as many friends (good, native speakers) as possible to contribute to translations. I'm just confused why we're not on the localization server yet. (Read http://drupal.org/node/570404 )

Somebody just tell me what you need or what to do.

I'm almost done.
two days and the Arabic.po will be availabe In shaa Allah.

I'll attach my first translated file which you can use for the moment untill I finish the whole translation.

finedesign’s picture

@AeAdawi thanks for your efforts. My offer still stands to help if there is something needed. Looking forward to the translation.

please AeAdawi if you want to contribute to translation checkout translation files from CVS. do not generate files yourself.
