Is the current metatags 7.x-1.x-dev ready enough to help with SEO or if not can anyone please suggest an alternative?

Yes, you can find an alternative at the Meta tags quick, which currently works perfectly fine with Drupal 7, and which may include on the near future, an upgrade path to Meta tags once it has a stable release.
