Hi just a quick question reagards to moderation approval timeline? Looking to organise upcoming Drupal User Group meet-up in Canberra and we greatly appreciate the group site being made available to members when the community has a chance to look at this request.

I went looking through the groups and noticed that the only Australian group is http://groups.drupal.org/australia - no Sydney, no Brisbane, just one big group. They use taxonomy to

It seems they want to have all Australian events/posts/meetups focused in that one group. And it seems to work for them.

At this time I wouldn't approve this group and would want to hear the Australian group's organizers thoughts.

Australia is a massive (by landmass) place. Travel between states is not at all realistic (for a Drupal user groups). However travel within a city (Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane) is (realistic) and is common sense.

I would argue to not approve a user group per capital city is counter-productive.

So advocating for a local group is a great idea and the group should receive approval under the g.d.o guildelines.

Though the community concensus is to keep it as one Australian group, which does have some benefits.

I'm going to be controversial and put forward my support for splitting it into the individual regions.

This is why:
http://groups.drupal.org/og/all?keys=melbourne&gt_tid[]=141
http://groups.drupal.org/og/all?keys=sydney&gt_tid[]=141
http://groups.drupal.org/og/all?keys=perth&gt_tid[]=141
http://groups.drupal.org/og/all?keys=tasmania&gt_tid[]=141
http://groups.drupal.org/og/all?keys=canberra&gt_tid[]=141
http://groups.drupal.org/og/all?keys=darwin&gt_tid[]=141

I fear we may lose people because they don't find anything on the above searches from http://groups.drupal.org/groups

I would be supportive of having the Australian page being set up to link to the individual group pages, this would also allow for people to subscribe with much less unrelevant posts.

But I'm not the only admin, I'm trying to get some input from other Aussies here.

Agreed, Still for the Australian User Groups we are trying to keep everything together. Right now the traffic through the entire group is still not that large, and we do have methods of allowing people to see content for just a region.

I would support having sub groups, so anything posted to an australia/melbourne, or a australia/canberra group would appear in the australia group without any manual intervention.

We have a nice tight nit community here in Australia, and it would be good to keep this momentum going.

Unfortunately this "tight nit-ed-ness" is at the expense of regional autonomy and sovereignty.

It's time to have Australia Drupal groups grow-up in a sense - to allow full regional ownership and control. To dispense with this quasi centralised hegemony of taxonomy attachment to a mother-ship precluding local group formation.

@webdeli the DrupalACT meeting was yesterday, would have been a good opportunity then to have raised this question for discussion with the group. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/227568

I don't think I saw you there...

Just seconding #6. The DrupalACT meetings have been taking place since the start of the year with organisation occurring both on groups.drupal.org as well as on other social media such as google plus, twitter and facebook.

Surely it would be optimal to open a dialogue with DrupalACT organisers prior to starting a new group so they can be involved in ongoing running and operation of the group rather than attempting to branch independently which could cause confusion amongst members as to which group is the definitive group.

I'm not against the idea of creating a Canberra group, however doing so without contacting Canberran Drupal users who have already undertaken the hard task of aggregating people together and organising a central location where said people can be aggregated sits uncomfortably with me and I would presume a number of others currently involved within DrupalACT.

@webdeli, can you please exchange phone numbers with justin freeman or typhonius

@gordon time to look bigger now. Your logic applied in the past but no-one really agrees with it now.

@realityloop +1

@webdeli - are you even in Canberra? I think the Canberra group should be managed by a local member. Your website suggests you're based in Melbourne?

If this Canberra group is to be approved, then:
@webdeli can you please add Justin Freeman to the list of organisers for this group. So that we can post announcements and meeting notes for the Drupal Canberra meetups which currently take place every month, 2nd Tuesday. The Canberra group should be representative of the local Canberra community and as such it should have representation from Canberrans.

There are currently 4 people organising the Drupal Canberra meetups.

As a coordinator of DrupalACT, I would like to firstly say that I welcome @webdeli's actions in promoting Drupal in Canberra. That said, we can't afford to split the community in the ACT – it's still in it infancy and we should be working together. We've seen good, early engagement at DrupalACT from the public and private sectors, but more work is needed.

As a reminder, DrupalACT meets on the first Tuesday of every month, and is active in the Australia group on g.d.o, Facebook and Google+.

I would like to propose the following:

  1. At the next DrupalACT meeting we'll discuss whether local users prefer using the Australia group or a specific Canberra group
  2. That DrupalACT group organisers, @Justin Freeman, @shorbie and myself, are added to Canberra group as administrators

And @webdeli, we'd love to hear what you'd like to do in Canberra, and how we can incorporate your ideas and involvement into DrupalACT...

Strongly support recommendations in #12.

More participation and easier communications channels are both welcome developments, but changes need to be implemented after consultation with the current active DrupalACT community.

http://groups.drupal.org/australia now has a link to the Canberra group, but I don't see a revision for that change. Can anyone offer more information about that? I.e. when did that happen and does it reflect support for this new group within the Australia group?

adammalone’s picture

From this thread it looks like the two regions were only added a couple of days ago to the Australia group.

silverwing’s picture

I approved the Melbourne group, but Canberra is still waiting for #12 before being officially approved.

re #14, there's nothing in the revision log for that group that shows when the links were added/the group node edited, but there should be.

They were added by @realityloop... http://groups.drupal.org/node/228448

Edit: Fixed the link
