Even though we are all currently very excited about DrupalCon Boston 2008 the Drupal Association is planning ahead to help coordinate the following DrupalCon for the Fall/Winter of 2008 in Europe. We mention Europe specifically since that has become a bit of a tradition, but if anyone would like to organize a conference in another location please draft and submit a proposal.

Request for Proposals

The Drupal Association is currently requesting proposals from aspiring DrupalCon organizers for the 2008 DrupalCon Europe. If you would like to organize a DrupalCon in your country please contact the association and submit a proposal that meets the criteria of the DrupalCon proposal guidelines

You are also welcome to comment below but please keep the conversation in regards to DrupalCon Europe.

Events such as DrupalCamps, DrupalJams, meetups etc. are self organized and do not require approval by the association.

The association will be meeting March 5th, at DrupalCon North America, to review and decide on a location for DrupalCon Europe; which is to be held in the Fall/Winter of 2008. By deciding the next DrupalCon at this early date we hope to give the organizers and participants enough time to make DrupalCon Europe 2008 the best DrupalCon ever...

This is a followup to the original request for proposals sent out in November. This post is to inform potential conference organizers about the upcoming deadline. If you've been thinking about putting together a proposal now is the time to get organized and submit it.

DrupalCons of 2009 and beyond

Similarly, if you are thinking of organizing a conference for 2009 please begin the planning process. Each DrupalCon has grown by almost double. In order to plan an event of that size for 2009 it will require the organizers to begin their work earlier and earlier.

Yes, we do have a proposal in already from eastern Europe. I had heard *rumours* of interest from Berlin, but we don't have an official proposal yet.

I'd like to correct you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungary is in Central Europe, not Eastern. (Some people would easily take offense if you say we are in Eastern Europe).

I entertain some doubt - next to Russia... Wikipedia has never been a save source, but doesn't matter much... *G*

No, Hungary is not next to Russia. There is a whole country between. Quite large European country.

I think an international conference should be announced at least nine months before the event. Drupalcon Boston was announced exactly two months prior. This is nowhere near enough time for people to arrange their lives so they can attend.

I agree with you that two months was rather short notice. I'm positive that if it could have been avoided it would have been avoided. We are at a minimum six months out from the next DrupalCon and we want to decide within the next few weeks so we are attempting to provide more notice. It may not be nine months but it's a lot more than two months.

Note also that we're already accepting proposals for the 2009 DrupalCon North America and/or Asia. The sooner we get proposals the sooner we can provide notice on where the next DrupalCon would be held.

DrupalCons are a major undertaking and are currently being ran by an all volunteer staff so please stick with us as we learn how to best put these on.

I think that having a goal of announcing the next DrupalCon at the prior DrupalCon would be ideal. If the process were more open, it could even take place during that DrupalCon, so people could vote (online, so it's not exclusive) for their favorite venues from valid proposals.

We could try to announce DrupalCon 2009 during DrupalCon Europe but I doubt we will have a decision for DrupalCon Europe in time for DrupalCon NA as we are planning to talk about DrupalCon Europe *at* DrupalCon NA (as well as hear from some of the proposed locations) and we are also waiting for more proposals (hint, hint.. submit, submit).

I think the public voting is definitely a good idea, however, we need more than a public vote based on location alone because we have to ensure some logistics are in place (hotels, transportation, recreation, food, costs, etc.). At this point we are not receiving enough fully fleshed out proposal to justify a vote though so its somewhat of a moot point (i.e after filtering proposals for ability to actually occur you might be voting on 1).

so what I'm trying to say is
Awesome idea, I'd love to do both!
but...
We need more proposals (hint to everyone, submit now, submit now)
