On my site (beavertonbahai.org) I get 5-20 registration requests per week from spammers all over the world. I set up captcha on the form for bots and several questions in my register form to weed out people who are not seriously interested in the faith.

If they do not put something meaningful for interests, I assume that they are not serious and delete the accounts. If they put in something good, I upgrade them to "contributing user" so they can post and comment and send them a welcome email.
When newly registered users were allowed to post or comment, I got several 1000 spam posts and comments in a week or so (even with captcha on registering). I set the permissions for accounts that I had not vetted to the same as anonymous. They can't do anything.
I also have captcha on the contact forms. I get several inquiries per month from local seekers, Baha'is traveling to the area, students wanting to write reports on us, requests for speakers, etc.
