Installation of a new site does not work. At the last stage of it, I encounter this:
--
Fatal error: Call to undefined function field_attach_load() in /your/site/root/includes/entity.inc on line 319

Configuration:
Apache2, MySQL 5.1.41, PHP 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.9 , XCache

More details: The error appears within a split second to the execution. It is not a permission error. Manifestates also when trying to install 7.1. Admin user details are not written to db (username, thus no-one can log into Drupal. Apache logs tell nothing. So modules/field/field.attach.inc does not get read as it should.

Ubuntu version is 10.04.2 (LTS)

Now after searching I am suspecting that there is a conflict with python or postgres. The server where Drupal 7 is supposed to run has OpenStreetmap server (with Tilecache), which uses python extensively, and Apache2 with wsgi module. I could temporarily disable wsgi module, but it did not alter the situation. However, I cannot uninstall python because this is a production server.

I hope someone can test if there is a conflict between python/postgres and Drupal7 install. Please help me out!

I tried all D7 variants, and the issue remains.

I am getting the same error on aegir when trying to install mediamosa

DamienMcKenna’s picture

I'm getting this on OSX running MAME with PHP 5.2.

This sounds like user_load() being called without field module being enable to me - or at least that's the most likely place I can see field_attach_load() happening early in the process.

Please try this patch for debugging, you may need to change the harcoded /tmp in there.

In typical fashion I'm no longer seeing this error, it appears some custom code was throwing something off, some changes from other developers and now I can't reproduce the error.

Title: Fatal error: Call to undefined function field_attach_load() » Fatal error: Call to undefined function field_attach_load() - prevent installer from continuing through a failed installation

I think there are tons of issues about this in the queue, and most were closed as "cannot reproduce" after a while.

As far as I can tell, this is often (always?) a symptom of a fatal error that occurred earlier in the install process, that prevented all required modules from actually getting installed. Then when you try to keep going through the Site Configuration screen, you eventually see an error like this one.

From previous issues, the root cause of the earlier fatal error could be things like:

Perhaps if we keep this one open, we should focus on making sure failed installs actually print a friendlier message? (Drupal probably shouldn't let you even get to the Site Configuration page or beyond if the batch installation of modules failed in the earlier step.)

c0ldfyr3’s picture

I would just like to add I had this same issue due to the memory limit being reached during installation of modules. It could be a good idea to undo installation if one of the ajax queries fails or at least inform the user that the installation may not work properly due to the failure. This might stop the ton of bugs being raised on the same issue.

Priority: Major » Critical

I have the same issue too,
I got this error after running the update.php script.
When I go the homepage or any other page I get just white page with this error!

Fatal error: Call to undefined function field_attach_load() in /home/htdocs/drupal7/includes/entity.inc on line 320

Please somebody give a solution to fix this issue, or at least give suggestion to get out of this error.

I marked it as critical because this error happened to my Drupal 7.7 stable release!

@Ciril, if you're able to apply patches, please apply the one from #6 and see if you get any output in /tmp when the error happens.

If you do, please post it here.

Not sure if my situation applies (I'm trying to create multisite sites with wget) but I do get that error. See attachment for the output of the patch.

There's a couple of possibilities here:

- field module wasn't enabled by the installer for some reason, but it still managed to get to this point.

- field module was enabled but for some reason was not available when user_load() was called.

Two things you can do to help debug this:

1. When you get to that point, check in the {system} table for the status of field module.

SELECT status FROM system WHERE name = 'field';

2. Apply this patch to see if it gets rid of the fatal error.

Not sure if my situation applies (I'm trying to create multisite sites with wget) but I do get that error.

I highly doubt it's possible to install Drupal using wget. My guess is that the batch installation of modules (i.e. the part that shows a progress bar when you install with a visual browser) wouldn't work at all? And if that fails, these are the exact kinds of errors you'd expect to see.

So I think we can add that scenario to my list in #9. That's why I think we should focus this issue on making sure you can't get through the installer if the batch installation fails catastrophically for whatever reason... Currently it lets you "pretend" to finish installing Drupal, but it shouldn't. You should never be able to get to the point where you can see these field_attach_load() errors.

As an aside, if you want to create multisites via the command line, why use something like wget? You can use drush site-install instead. Or if that doesn't provide enough flexibility, then (in Drupal 7 at least) you can look at the code and write your own little script that calls the same core API functions that the Drush command uses. Much, much cleaner way of doing it.

Priority: Critical » Major

Since this appears to be just a symptom of other problems during install, it can't be marked critical, however leaving at major since I agree with David we need to try to get the installer to fail earlier here.

Few more data points on this problem.

I am seeing this with D7.7 on a fairly vanilla CentOS 5.5 system running Zend Server CE w/ PHP 5.2 and MySQL 5.0.77. Same server runs Drupal 6.22 just fine.

When I try to install I can't get past the database config steps; the page just refreshed w/ the forms cleared. If I goto the install script directly, it jumps directly to the settings page, and then I get the Fatal Error.

Nothing is showing up in the logfiles, other than this Fatal Error.

MySQL user has full permissions, minus GRANT.

Oddly enough, if I run the install process via drush, everything works.

Also, I would be willing to test patches and/or install a version with debug / more logging enabled.

spyderpie’s picture

In my case, on Godaddy, with Drupal 7.8 ... this error was caused by a corrupted settings.php file (Which I tried to edit like the old days before installing, forgetting the installer does it for me now). Deleted it and the database, reran the installer and all is well. Hope this helps someone.

Peace,
Julie

I'm getting this on a site with a failed upgrade, so deleting the database doesn't seem to be the answer, at least for me.

I'm having a problem where after the "Set up database" I land on a Drupal 404 page. When I access the install.php again I can get to the "Configure site" screen. When I submit that form I get the same fatal error as the OP. No other PHP errors. I'm using E_ALL.

In system table only user and system modules have status = 1 (and Bartik theme). All others have 0.

In variable table the install_task value is install_profile_modules. It looks like for some reason Drupal fails to install the profile modules.

I'm using the minimal installation.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function field_attach_load() in /home/htdocs/drupal7/includes/entity.inc on line 320

I got the same message.

My Cause:

  • Installation erred out during settings.php creation because
    • I'm installing in a subfolder and using .htaccess mod_rewrite to make it appear at domain root
    • When install.php creates settings.php from defaul_settings.php, base_url is not set to the correct directory, generating an error and halting installer
  • Reloading install.php makes it appear that the installation continues correctly but in reality it does not continue creating the database tables (only 32 tables created) and apparently the field_attach_load() is looking for a missing table.

My Solution:

What I did was

  • Corrected the base_url in settings.php
  • Dropped the tables in the database, so installer can recreate them
  • Run install.php again

This got around the error.

I would, however, like to know how I can set base_url while running install.php

The problem, it looks to me, is that the installer is not verifying/rerunning table creation section when an error occurs.

Per a3arar'd demand, I have commented.

Edit: 227,154 sites have reported running Drupal 7. Those sites somehow have managed to get through the installer. If your install broke, wipe the DB and restart in another browser. That's the best I can suggest. Under no circumstances we are going to try to make Drupal 7 installer reentrant.

Got the same error with a fresh install of Drupal 7.10 on XAMPP 1.7.7 (Win XP):
Apache/2.2.21 (Win32) mod_ssl/2.2.21 OpenSSL/1.0.0e PHP/5.3.8 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.10.1

Will look further into the issue.

Updating to 7.10 on another machine worked ok.

EDIT

  • The installation seems to have finished somehow, but I couldn't log-in because there was no user 1 created.
  • A fresh install worked ok so I suppose the issue was due to the PHP execution time limit of 30 seconds mentioned above.

EDIT 2
I'm not sure it's the cookie settings as mentioned in #33 as the status bar did work with both my installs.

I have been able to reproduce the bug.

It occurs b/c I had cookies off in my browser. After the database config step, when the progress bar is displayed, is when the cookies are need to track state. ( it appears).

After turning on cookies, and going through the process again, everything worked.

Maybe add a cookie enabled check during installation?

I just had the "Fatal error: Call to undefined function field_attach_load()" with Drupal 7/Openpublish and it was related to permissions and POSSIBLY also to cookies (not sure, but I definitely didn't get the progress bar).

I doublechecked files, webspace, system requirements vs. my server, etc. I thought I had the files chmodded correctly but 7-5-5 (I can't remember where I read that but it may also differ slightly for the Openpublish flavor) didn't work - so I re-chomoded 7-7-7. Just chmodding and refreshing did not work (I didn't get to the progress meter) - just a different fatal message (sorry, I didn't screencapture it).

So, I created a new database, went back (just used my back button) a step to get to the db info page (I did NOT reinstall Drupal7/Openpublish), then cleared my cookies. Entered my new db info, and went through the process again. This time everything went as it should.

It seems like this problem probably has multiple causes, but I just wanted to add another count for permissions/cookies.
;-)
good luck everyone.

I had the same error (it had nothing to do with cookies or 777).

And solved it by the mentioned solution: creation of a new database and a rerun of the installation.

Perhaps it would be an idea for a future issue of the installation script to have a log or automatic message about what is going wrong.

Tried with both 7.10 and 7.x-dev, with all the suggestions above on both, but nothing worked for me (this process drug on for a good 6 hours over two days). Finally installed Drupal in a VM (on my local machine, which I configured as closely as possible to my live server), exported the database, and then imported that to my live site. Now all is well (which blew my mind, but hey - I'll take it)! Very frustrating, nevertheless, and nearly forced me to switch to one of a half dozen other CMSes that are known to work perfectly fine on the same server :(

I got Drupal 7.12 to install on my server by doing:
1. clearing the cache and cookies from my web browser
2. re-copying the "sites" folder from my downloaded zip file to the server
3. deleting all tables from the database

One thing that wasn't clear to me is that the install.php script does the creation of the settings.php file. I was accustomed to the D6 installation where this is hand-edited.

I am very much a new user, just trying to install:

Running as localhost on:
Mac OS X 10.5.8
XAMPP for Mac OSX 1.7.3
Safari 5.0.6
Drupal 7.12

I am getting this error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function field_attach_load() in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/drupal/includes/entity.inc on line 320

On initial set up I had permission problems which I fixed. Then realised I had not set up the database (!!). Set the database up via phpmyadmin and that's when I ran into this above fatal error message when the install was at the end configure stage.

Now I am really stuck, out of my depth and hitting my head against the desk.

So far, I have cleaned browser cookies, emptied cache, deleted original database and created a new one, but I'm still no nearer a solution.
So any suggestions to a novice ?

- delete everything and download it all again?
- use firefox?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I've just run the install on another mac (with exactly the same set up) and replicated the same permission & database mistakes, but this time the full installation ran perfectly when they were corrected.

When an issue becomes infamous enough for people to start to refer to it by name ("the 31 tables problem"), it needs a fresh look.

I've tried all of these, and none of them have worked for me (including trying all of them simultaneously):

1. Clearing the database cache.
2. Dropping and recreating the database.
3. Making the entire directory tree (files and directories) world-writeable.
4. setting apc.stat=1 (and restarting Apache).
5. Setting wincache.ocenabled=0 (and restarting Apache).
6. Clearing the browser cache.
7. Switching among different browser families (Firefox, Chrome, IE) on different OSes (XP, Vista, Xubuntu).
8. Not installing into a subdirectory of the document root.
9. Only using the default .htaccess shipped with the source.
10. Stripping all other content from the document root.
[11.] session.cookies_secure=0 [EDIT: worked for me; see below]

... and other people have tried, with some success:

12. Upgrading from PHP 5.2.x to 5.3.x.
13. Increasing the PHP max_execution_time value.
14. Increasing the PHP memory_limit value.
15. Enable cookies in PHP.
16. Disabling Xdebug.
17. If using a reverse proxy, try removing it to see if the problem persists. (from lee007)

I'm totally new to Drupal, but not new to PHP and MySQL, and I think that this response from a respected long-time community member is not statistically relevant, and does not do justice to the otherwise great community atmosphere of the project. Yes, 227,154 sites were running Drupal 7, but how many people gave up and moved on to some other project because the installer does not provide enough feedback or logging to diagnose their problem?

In my (admittedly Drupal-noob) view, the sheer number of these problems make a strong argument for the need to improve the diagnostic underpinnings of the installer, and how it tracks progress/state through its list of tasks. Is there some way that visibility into these failure modes could be added to the installer -- without having to make it fully re-entrant?

In other words, how can the installer be instrumented so that people having this class of problem can provide meaningful feedback to the development team?

UPDATE: Setting session.cookies_secure=0 addressed my issue. I believe that a check for this setting, and many of the other gotchas listed above, should be added to the checks performed by the installer. In a larger sense, since the installer is the gateway to the application for many new users, I think that spending cycles on putting a bullet in The 31 Tables Problem would go a long way to improve first impressions and reduce forum noise.

UPDATE: Future readers of this thread: please note which of the above worked for you (or note new solutions!) so that we can inform improvements to the installer. If something not on my list worked for you, contact me and I will add your solution to the list for the benefit of others.

I spent something like 2 hours on this one until I figured it out.

This is about cookies and base url. Here is the problem:

first install through install.php :

1. I select the installation type
2. I select the language
3. I select the database

---- then here it goes to a page not found.
---- so, I edit settings.php and set the correct $base_url in it.

4. I retype install.php, goes step 1 and step 2, then goes straight onto step 6 - Sie Configuration. In the database at the moment are 32 tables (should be 74)
5. As I select emails and timezones ecc it goes to the server error 500 and in the error log you get missing the function field_attach_load()

---

The fix was:

1. uncomment in settings.php: $cookie_domain = '.example.com';
2. make sure $base_url is set to the same site as $cookie_domain, but instead of http:// just a dot .
3. drop all tables in database
4. rerun install.php

in this case it doesnt rewrite the settings.php anymore and creates everything in the database while keeping your session correctly

Guess this happened to me because I am on a shared hosting, and my HTTP_HOST is set to my domain name like "example.com" while I was not yet using it and accessing my site through the "support domain" like example.com.myhost.com.

So, in other words:

If I just run the install everything fails because Drupal takes note of my HTTP_HOST value. I cant even see the CSS or Javascript like that...
If I just set base_url to example.com.myhost.com then my styles are loaded but my session drops in the middle.
If I fix settings.php to have both $base_url and $cookie_domain hardset by me, then drop the DB, the installation goes perfect, because it doesnt recreate then settings.php as it exists already.

And I think this should be fixed in the next releases, its a rare situation but still a fact that at some point the cookies are set in a wrong way, based n HTTP_HOST and not $base_url set earlier.

Hope this helps someone...

I received this error during a fresh install of Drupal 7.15 (w/ PHP 5.3.5, MySQL 5.1.63):
PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function node_types_rebuild() in /var/www/html/drupal-core/includes/common.inc on line 7309.

I cannot speak to which of the following actually solved my problem because I did them all at once, but something among these changes did the job:
- I dropped and recreated the drupal DB.
- Increased PHP max_execution_time from 30 to 300 (reset after install).
- Increased PHP memory_limit from 128M to 1024M (reset after install).
- Added session.cookie_secure = 0 to php.ini (originally commented out).

I am leaning towards the max_execution_time change as the ultimate fix because the install process took quite a bit longer the second time around, but I can't say for sure.

Thanks a lot for compiling this list!

  • dropped database and recreated (don't forget to recreate db user)
  • cleared cache in browser

Issue summary: View changes

Hi all,

I ran into this problem while setting up a Drupal installation within another site. The issue was that the main site is using a reverse proxy, so Drupal needs to be informed of this up-front during setup. For some more information, see:

https://drupal.org/node/313145

To complete installation, I had to add roughly the following to my setup.php.

// For http/https, secure access to backend administration pages is a must:
if ((isset($_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO']) &&
     strtolower($_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO']) == 'https')) {
  $base_url = 'https://www.site.com/path';
}
elseif ((isset($_SERVER['HTTP_X_ORIGINAL_PROTOCOL']) &&
	 strtolower($_SERVER['HTTP_X_ORIGINAL_PROTOCOL']) == 'https')) {
  $base_url = 'https://www.site.com/path';
}
else {
  $base_url = 'http://www.site.com/path';
}
$conf['reverse_proxy'] = TRUE;
$conf['reverse_proxy_addresses'] =
  array('111.111.1.11','222.222.2.22','333.333.3.33','444.444.4.44');
$conf['reverse_proxy_header'] = 'HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO';

I just ran into this one - the "31 tables" problem.
A glance in the apache logs showed me that drush on an upgrade had put a drush-backups in the current directory (my module directory) instead of in my home directory. Not sure why this happened, but the result was re-declaration of a function.

As a result I recommend when this happens:

  1. Checking your web server logs, if you have access to them. It may tell you exactly where is the problem.
  2. Clearing all of the code directories and reloading, in case something like this happened to you.
