Show off your Drupal site

NYC.is (http://nyc.is/), New York City's first social news site, launched this summer. I am extremely grateful to the Drupal community for all the great modules that have allowed me to put the site together.

Goals:

The goal was for the site to be kind of like a localized New York City version of Digg or Reddit. Rather than using the editor curator approach -- like Huffington Post -- all the users of the site are New Yorkers that submit NYC-related stories and vote up and down on them to get them to the front page. The site also allows users to publish their own blog posts into the news stream, so it also has the potential to become a place for community journalism.

We also used one custom module (created by ivanSF) that allowed for the node type "story" to be automatically entered into the channel of upcoming drigg-node types, which are referred to as "scoops." The beauty of this feature is that it allows a New Yorker with an interesting/important story to use our platform for both publishing and distribution, rather than having to put together their own blog and regularly update it.

New to the community. My company Apture released our first plugin for the Drupal platform a week ago and I wanted to thank anyone who has checked it out and offered feedback.

If you havent heard of Apture we bring 50+ content sources to your site so users don't have to leave your page to read them. The content blooms open in its own little mini window. This includes Twitter, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, YouTube and many others.

A friend of the owner managed to snag this gig for he and I. The original site was in truly sorry shape- a Microsoft Word type of website, if you know what I mean.
My buddy Shawn Lemmon put together the initial pixels in photoshop and passed it off to me to finish up and propagate to a brand new Drupal installation on my servers.

This site is so thick with Views and Panels that it's dizzying! Panels within panels within more panels :) It was good practice for future projects that will be heavy in those modules too.

The only challenge of this site was in making it totally easy to edit and manage for its owner, who doesn't have any experience with cms.. making sure to have not one hard coded bit in this project was the reason that so much of this is buried in layers of panel panes/pages. I needed to make sure that all he needs to do is add an image or a trail map PDF, or what have you, and it will show up where it needs to. I call it a challenge because I typically take... shortcuts on my own personal projects hehe.
